SEC preview... |

Okay, but I don't know how you can say this. | #1
QB Wesley Carroll will be better as a sophomore, but he is a far cry from the rest of the league. The guy was forced into the starting lineup as a true freshman last year, didn't once crumble under the pressure, and overall just wasn't that horrible. In fact, I have distinct memories of him pulling a good play out of his ass when they were backed into a corner more than once (Bama, UM come to mind.) Plus, he has more SEC experience than several teams' starters at this point, which I would say makes him at least even with some of the unproven QBs (Snead?). The rest of the summary was almost too optimistic about EmState, so it kind of evens out I guess. I know for a fact the offense will have problems, make no mistake. I'm just saying it won't be because Carroll is so much worse than every other quarterback in the league. |

People look at Wes's numbers and think they're.... | #3
|
pretty pedestrian, and they are, but they only tell part of the story. For us, in this offense, Carroll is effective -- a good game manager. I hope he puts
up better numbers this fall, but I don't think he has to be an all-SEC type for us to a great year.

No, but Snead is without a shadow of a doubt Eli II, right? | #4

All I'm saying is no one knows yet. Jackass. |

A key stat you can't list is he is clutch | #5
|
He has already proven that the game in high school his senior year against #1 high school team wasn't a fluke. He has the it factor that great qbs have.
If he was 6'3" and better arm strength he would be probably have a shot at the NFL.

I agree with that... | #6 | ||
|
he was a true freshman, not expected to play, thrown into the fray after 3 or 4 games, and he threw more TDs than INTs and completed more than half of his
passes.
And, oh by the way, he wasn't fully recovered from shoulder surgery. He had redshirt written all over him. This year will be a better time to judge him as an overall QB.

Here's what concerns me about Carroll. | #7
|
He got less and less effective the longer the season went on last year. I can buy the "true freshman" and "injured shoulder" excuses. But overall he was terrible in our last two games (you could even say the last three games because of the 4 picks he threw in the Arkansas game). I hope he'll be better in 2008, and he very well may be. But the poor coaching he's getting and his performance at the end of last season don't leave me convinced. |

And that...is the reason why I think his best year is behind him. | #8

He played as a true freshman at about 70% and you think his best year is behind him?

Again Bama is overrated.... | #10
|
While the article acknowledges that Bama has a rough road schedule, to suggest that Bama could be 10-2 and go 5-0 in SECW play is ridiculous. I guess it
*could* happen but to think it's even likely is silly.
Ok...it states that if everything goes badly for the Tide they could be 4-8. That's quite a range of a prediction. Why not just say 6-8 wins is their range. I've now noticed other teams (UK, MSU) are in the 4-8 to 10-2 range. This is really not much of prediction. I'm willing to say that neither UK, MSU or Bama will win more than 8 games.

How much better did Mike Henig get year to year with coaching?

I agree that one does not necessarily mean... | #13
|
the other will happen, however, that fact is that Mike Henig did not really improve much. Carroll IS a better football player than Henig. As long as we limit
turnovers and run the ball Carroll will not need good numbers. If we recruit some better offensive talent Carroll may have a good senior year.

I don't buy that he was less effective | #14
|
In the Arkansas game, he had 4 picks, but he was also throwing the rock down field with an injured shoulder and a limited playbook. Maybe you didn't catch
it, but he performance that day was as good as you could ask of anybody. Our defense lost that game, not Wes.
I'll give you he had a shitty day against Ole Miss. Then in the Liberty Bowl, I seem to remember us running like crazy and it was Wes's option plays that finally brought us down the field to put us in for six. I don't think he is an NFL QB or anything, but he is the best we have seen around here in a long time. I don't know about our system, but his experience is going to make us better this year.
I can't close down the bar anymore, but I can sure as hell open it up.

And that...is the reason why I think his best year is behind him. "So maybe the new meaning of "Croomed" should be you just got your ass beat. And, given time, Sylvester is going to do it to you again." Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports' national columnist. |

I agree the schedule is one of the "easier" ones in the SEC. Combine that.......... | #17
|
..........with the returning playaers and a new $1.7 mil salary for Croom, we ought to send his ass out of town on a rail if we can't AT LEAST get bowl
eligible.
I disagree about Carroll like some others here. He was thrown to the wolves and did a fairly remarkable job as a true frosh. I don't know what we'll see from him this year, but he should have gotten more respect than what's being shown. |

In a lot of ways, he had a great game against Arkansas. | #18
|
But 4 picks isn't acceptable no matter what else you do. I'd much rather he had half the yards and no turnovers. The main reason we lost that game
was the defense, but they did get 1 TD off of one of his interceptions and he threw another when we were in the red zone. Without those 2 turnovers (and with
a TD in the red zone), hypothetically we'd be going to overtime at 38-38.
