Posts: 241 05/11/09 05:18 PM	Tags : None I'm not the biggest baseball expert on this board so I just assumed in baseball, a team could not really pull off a rivalry win off emotion like you can in football. I also realize our bats have been pretty good too, yet our bull-pen piss poor. But, I'm starting to think we pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the SEC baseball season this past weekend in Oxford. Hell, I'm thinking maybe Mullen & co. can do the same for us in FB (which the under-dog can win over heavily favored teams by emotion). Plus, we play these bastards in 'Vegas too. Plus, maybe Tyler Russell would be ready by then. Flame away.

Between now and then who knows how many injuries each team will have, what the records will be (maybe even the teams rankings), or the level of emotion each team is playing at each game. second Croom can lose to a DI-AA team in one season and then follow up with an upset against Florida just goes to show anything can happen for a MSU football team when expectations are not high.. third this game is 5 months away it should not even be discussed in a win/lose manner atleast until the season has arrived.

If you have a pitcher or two pitch a good game, you can win in baseball even if you aren't the better team. In football, it takes a full team effort to pull that kind of upset, which makes it a lot less common in football than in baseball. On the subject of upsets, on paper, UT taking 2 of 3 from LSU in Baton Rouge is just a little bit bigger right now. UT is currently 12th in the SEC. LSU is currently 1st. We're currently 4th. You're currently 11th. So UT taking two over LSU is a bigger upset at this point. Outside of that one, it was probably the biggest upset in the league this year. In football, even with emotion, you rarely see a Top 10 team lose to one of the worst in the conference, though it does happen. It just doesn't happen as often as in baseball. In baseball, it's much more common. In fact, you may not have even had the biggest upset of the weekend. NC State took 2 of 3 from UNC this weekend which is pretty close to as big of an upset. UNC was Top 5 and No. 1 in the RPI. NC State is now 10-17 in the ACC.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not calling a win or anything, but at the same time MSU winning is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. As far as baseball, this year, I think some of it was Ole Miss had a lot more pressure on them than we did, and they didn't handle it that well. I'm sure their players heard a lot of stuff about a lot of their fans expecting a sweep on graduation weekend, plus they are in contention for the SEC Championship, have a lot of seeding types of things on the line at etc. MSU, on the other hand, didn't really have a whole lot to lose. If we won, great, and if not, we weren't expected to anyway, and losing to the #7 team in the country isn't very shameful either. Not to take anything away from our baseball team- they outplayed Ole Miss, and they deserve credit for that. I used to write it off to them having more home grown racist white bread boys than us, but I don't know if that's true anymore. Mebbe it's the $100 handshakes during the Walk of Champions (or perhaps it's Whiskey Alley (NOT)). Or mebbe we're just M-State.

While some MSU fans choose to crow over taking 2 of 3 from OM, I choose to point out that the baseball program is the worst it's been in my entire life and that Rebel baseball has embarrassingly taken its place as the dominating program in this state(Thanks LT and Ron). So if some people want to celebrate moral victories and head-to-head bragging rights, by all means go ahead, but me personally? I'll take 11-1 with a loss to OM in football than 1-11 and an Egg Bowl victory. In basketball I'll take 0-2 against the Rebs and a trip to the NCAA Tourney over 2-0 and an NIT berth. In baseball I'll take 0-3 against the Rebs and a trip to Omaha over what what some of you are celebrating this year. Point being, I don't give a shit anymore about what we do or don't do against the Rebs. The sole purpose of the existence of our rivalry has devolved into the last glimmer of hope, the one salvagable element, for almost every sports season in many MSU fans' eyes. Posts: 746 05/11/09 10:37 PM	and alot of people don't want to do that this weekend. We definitely choked this weekend but you have to give credit to MSU. The way I saw the weekend was this, both teams played well Friday night, MSU just did a little bit more to win. I thought we played pretty well and couldn't find that much to bitch about in that game. We just got beat. On Saturday I didn't think we showed up and MSU came out after the rain delay and took it to us. On Sunday I thought Irwin pitched well and our bats finally showed up late in that game. Jones gave MSU a chance but MSU seemed content with the series and the bats never came out. So overall OM played alot better than MSU one game, MSU played alot better than OM one game, and the one game both teams played pretty well, MSU did just a little bit more and gutted out the win. So sure we choked but I give MSU credit for winning the series because for the one game both teams played pretty well, they did enough to win and we didn't. I guess my point is while it is fun to make fun of us for choking, MSU still deserves credit for taking damn near our best shot on Friday and still beating us.

If academic integrity is restored at Ole Miss we win, because few of their academically challenged football players will make any kind of grades on their own.

If we were 11-0 heading into the Egg Bowl, or lost a series to OM after an outstanding year, and so on for each sport, I bet you and many others on here would be all up in arms about it. Especially if the roles were reversed like this weekend. On the flip side, just because someone enjoys a victory over the Rebs in a bad year doesn't mean they could care less about the rest of the season. They are not mutually exclusive. Like you said, you CHOOSE to dwell on the rest of the season. Others do not. Nothing wrong with that. If we would have beaten OM 80-0 last year or this year or any year, I would have been talking smack from the stands to the Grove to the Square, drinking their liquor, and feeling up their women in the process. I quess it would make a better fan to sulk and pout about the rest of the season though. As for them being the "dominating program in this state"......evidently not.

Why didn't we give grades to Rory Johnson, Mico McSwain, Jamal Harvey, and Chris Strong? Wouldn't it have been worth it to us to keep those guys around? I'm not saying every one of our players is college material. They're not. However, they're no different than the players at MSU or any other SEC school. We have athlete friendly classes, athlete friendly majors, and tutors, just like every other school. You get a much easier path to staying in school if you're an athlete, but you don't get a free pass. You still have to show up and do something.

I know a former "tutor" at each school and they have talked about how things go in those rooms. It was explained by another Ole Miss poster who informed us that the University of Mississippi faculty had changed their campus-wide grading structure. He said 1/3 of the team was failing before they changed the policy. I took his post to mean that football players now get a passing grade whether they show up to class or not.
