Anyone else already tired of this OLE MISS BCS Champs talk? |
Lead | ||

ESPN the Magazine has OLE MISS #4 in the nation. If they even get close to Atlanta I am going to be pissed. Who in the West is going to give the rebels a
beatdown? I just can't deal with those arrogant Rebels win they win. They are much better to tolerate when they lose. Damn I miss Coach O.

they could go to the SEC Title Game and the CWS in a span of 7 months. He said if that happens, he is moving to Vermont.
Of course, we did this in 1998.

We're "trendy", yet we finished off an 0-8 SEC campaign just 17 short months ago.
I'll take the hype and the publicity, because it sure doesn't hurt, but I'll wait until we get through SC and Vandy before I start thinking we have a chance at a really good year. Those two games still scare me to death. |

They are losing two likely first round picks on the OL and DL, and people are expecting them to improve?
Does this make sense to anyone else? |

That's all anyone is talking about right now. I will admit that they have a good team, but I will also tell you that they have the weakest non-conference
schedule in all of college football. That was announced this morning. I don't care how many games those pricks win, they will still be pricks!

If I remember, wasn't 2001 the year when the Juco system blew up on Jackie?

It was around that time! But all MS schools are having to go out of state for players these days. Our high school stars are to stupid to get into college.

to fill that void and we had a much better backfield on paper. I would take Madkin, Dontae, and Dicenzo going into 2001 over yours on paper. Shit, we were
claimed by some to have the best backfield in the nation.
Madkin is not as good as Snead though. And yes, 2001 was the year of the Arizona Western blowup.

They have a good team and deserve some of the hype. I am not ready to put them Top 5 yet, but Top 10 based on the end of the year is not a stretch. I can
easily see Ole Miss in the same situation as Auburn a few years ago due to their schedule.
I think the major problem that Ole Miss will have to overcome this season is that they are Ole Miss. When a strong Florida, LSU, USC, etc come in to a game, they carry a sense of power and intimdation with them. Even as a Top 5 team, there is not one team in the SEC that will believe they can not beat Ole Miss. Before you UM fans, get all up in arms, notice I am not saying that they can beat Ole Miss, but I am saying that believe they can beat Ole Miss. You will get everyones best shot this year because you will carry in a big ranking and past history has not had Ole Miss as a dominant team. Every SEC team will see a chance for a big upset and will bring their A game.

I've always felt like that's one of the reason Vandy has given us fits over the years. Even when we do have good teams and they have awful teams (see
2003), they still give us fits, because they see the name on our jersey and mark it down as a chance for a win.
The name definitely does make a difference. It's harder to be taken seriously if you aren't one of the 20 or so teams that get the name recognition nationally. |

but going into 2001, they were unreal. Of course, the results weren't there. We had basically 2 1,000 yd rushers. Snead is better than Madkin.

You say newer players. However, if you look at our starting 22, every starter, with the exception of 2 O-linemen, come into the year either as a returning
starter or someone who received significant minutes as a back up. Our main questions are those 2 OL spots and the reserves at certain positions. The starting
22 overall will be very experienced with almost no new faces. I can't remember what you had in 2001 or how many new faces you had in 2001 though.

I don't expect you to understand or agree with what I'm about to say. And by no means do I think we are a BCS team. I see us losing 2-4 games this
season.
We lose Peria Jerry. He was my favorite player over the last decade of OM football. He can't be replaced with one guy. However, the sum of Ted Laurent, Lawon Scott, Jerrell Powe, and Justin Smith can help. All these guys got lots of PT last season. Then add in a healthy and motivated Greg Hardy and the experience of a Marcus Tillman and you have one of the SEC's best defensive lines. Emmanuel Stephens and Gerald Rivers are pretty good too. I'd say a top 4 SEC line. The secondary will probably be the most improved aspect of our team. For years they have been our weakness. Marshay Green struggled early before really coming into his own in the last 5-6 games of last season. Cassius Vaughn has been starting since his freshman season. Fon Ingram has some SEC experience. Jeremy McGee is experienced and Marcus Temple played a ton for a freshman last season. The real strength of our secondary will be Kendrick Lewis. He had a great season last year and is now comfortable as a safety after converting from WR. Losing Jamarca Sanford's leadership and run support is big, but anyone who followed us closely knows that Johnny Brown is a better player skillwise. We will be much better in the secondary. The linebackers lost some solid contributers. However Patrick Trahan, Allen Walker, and Lamar Brumfield, and Jonathan Cornell bring a ton of SEC experience to the table. Trahan showed up late and out of shape last season after spending all of his time trying to get qualified. His real presence was never felt until the bowl game. Lots of casual fans have no idea how good this guy and a bigger Walker will be this season. Peria was our MVP last season, but losing Oher hurts worse because of who the replacements are. There is no doubt in my mind that Bradley Sowell & Rishaw Johnson will make some mistakes this season and Snead will be sacked more often. Sowell & Johnson do have some valuable experience in SEC play, but not starting. Our left side of the OL is our biggest question mark. If Sowell doesn't perform, Bobby Massie will be thrust in to duty earlier. The right side of our line will be our strength of the OL. Don't be surprised when we run early and often behind John Jerry and Reid Neely. Our center, Geralds, started every game last season and was very solid. The QB & RB postions will only get better after all the SEC experience last season. The WR's will have a hard time filling the role of Mike Wallace, but as a whole they are solid with Hodge, Dexter, Summers, Breux, and newcomer Andrew Harris. Gerald Rivers came on late in the bowl game at TE last season. Newcomers Allen & Epperson are reportedly performing very well. I feel like Backer after typing all of that. But my point is that the casual observer is putting too much emphasis on the loss of two players. You have to consider the experience gained by some of these other stars...Snead, Bolden, Eason, Dex, Geralds, Jerry, Hodge, Breux, Summers, Laurent, Powe, Scott, Tillman, Hardy, Lockett, Walker, Trahan, Cornell, Lewis, and Vaughn. That's a lot of very experienced SEC players. The experience gained by all of these players could very well trump the loss of a few. Again...I realize that most of you will view this as koolaid, but maybe Ronny can archive it and you can bust my balls later. I realize that a big injury at QB or OL could change all of this, but the thought that OM could have a very good season isn't that much of a stretch. Robert Elliot lives across the street from me. I was watching the whole fucking time. The Ole Miss coaches came out of the house and Croom and Melvin Smith
pull up on dubz riding spinners. Freeze gets pissed and whips out his cell phone. Croom and Smith pull off with Jermaine Dupree blaring "Money Ain't a
Thing." Croom flipped off the Ole Miss coaches as they were riding off.

The key to replacing Jerry | #15
|
isn't in a new player, it's having a healthy and motivated Greg Hardy. If Greg Hardy is there all season, I don't think you will see any drop in
production from our D-line.
I don't think we can replace Oher. Bradley Sowell isn't ever going to equal Oher. Bobbie Massie has the pedigree to be like Oher, but he isn't going to step out there and do it from day 1. He has a ways to go. I'm also concerned about replacing Mike Wallace. His ability to stretch the field allowed our offense to do a lot of things. Maurice Miller was a big loss too. The losses on defense don't concern me as much. I never thought Jamarca Sanford was very good (I've been saying this for three seasons, my dislike of him is well documented) and I think Johnny Brown or Fon Ingram will be just as serviceable out there. Palmer was a good linebacker, but I think Patrick Trahan will be better. Our depth at linebacker sucks though. We can't afford an injury there at all. |

But, I could have stopped at the "I see us losing 2-4 games".
That seems like a reasonable thought based on last year. I'm not trying a "Ole Miss sUcKz BaLLz!" approach. I do think you'll be in the top half of the conference, but I don't see you winning the west. But I'm not going to be shocked or outraged if it happens. However, I can most definitely be lumped as a "casual observer" of Ole Miss, at best. And I still think it's going to be harder to replace two first round picks than you think it will be. |

and I also think it's funny that the "They are Ole Miss" deal that could possibly hurt them in '09, really helped them in '08. They
didn't have a bullseye on them last year and the name was not taken seriously. Next year, it will be reversed like you said.

Interesting question | #19

I would also take Snead (with Austin as coordinator), McCluster, and Bolden over Madkin, Miller, and pre-weight gain Dontae. Although if you're going to
run a Sherrillean offense, the latter would be better.
