Oxford HS Montez Phillips commits to MSU |
Lead | ||
|
Had offers from MSU, USM, and UM. 3* on Rivals.com and #15 on Rivals.com preseason Mississippi top 25. Croom took one right out of the Rebels back yard.
Bama has been coming at this kid hard the past couple of weeks.

That surprises me because, well, he's from Oxford. Not that we haven't gotten anyone from there in the past, like Pegues, but still.
I'd like to get their TE as well. |

Pegues was from South Panola
good to see we got another wide out.

It will get real ugly when... | #7

Emmanuel McCray from Forest Hill switches his commitment from UM to MSU. He's a 3* offensive tackle from Jackson. He and Gabriel Jackson from Liberty, MS
are the top 2 OT in the state this year.
Edited to say: you know we are doing well in recruiting when the Spirit board is complaining about us having a barbeque picnic on an unofficial visit for these players. Nevermind that we had over 1,000 players on campus and 4 of them committed. Picnic$ and Barbeque$ as they would say.

Quote from South Panola's head coach about M. Phillips: | #12
|
"Their QB (Montez Phillips) is a difference
maker," added South Panola head coach, Lance Pogue. "There is no question they will be the team to beat in (Class) 4A. My belief is there is not a
better team in 4A, unless they are hiding somewhere. Their QB can win it on his own. He can single handily keep them going. But they have a tough front seven
on defense. That number 75 (DT) is a load, and they have good skilled players. But their QB can make it happen with his arms and legs. There are not many in
the state in his class."

I haven't kept track, but I'd guess that we don't land at least half of the guys from Oxford and Lafayette.
If you grow up in a small town, in many cases you don't want to continue to stay in the same town for your college experience. Most people go away for school if possible, so I'd say that him being from Oxford may have actually made it more difficult for us. Off the top of my head, Matt Malouf went to Memphis, that kid from Lafayette a year or two ago went to Alabama. Frink from Oxford went to Stanford. Jamison Hughes came to Ole Miss, but he wasn't a native Oxford kid. He was a coach's son and followed his dad. Again, someone else would likely have a better list, but I really don't think that a kid being from Oxford is an advantage for us. |

For someone that doesn't follow recruiting, you sure seem to know and comment an awful lot about... recruiting.

Didn't Malouf end up at Samford or some place like that?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do still follow recruiting a little bit, mainly to keep up with who we are recruiting and what people are saying about our recruits. What I don't get into is all the ranking BS, and I don't make judgments about players based off what someone said about them in high school or how many offers they have, etc. All I really care about is if they show up and how they perform if they do make it to campus. To answer the other poster on Malouf, yes he did transfer to Samford. Since they are D-1AA, I believe he gets to play immediately, which means there is a chance he could be starting against us this year when Samford comes to town. |

Here's some quotes from message boards around the conference ... | #18
|
From a UT board: 'He [Croom] is taking Ole Miss to the shed in recruiting MS talent.'
From an Auburn board: 'Looks like ol' Croom is getting the hang of recruitin.' From a LSU board: 'Last years results gave Croom and MSU lots of hype, and therefore gave good reason for some of these big time Mississippi boys to stay at home, instead of going way off around the SEC.' From a UF board: 'Croom is dominating Ole Miss in recruiting. MSU will be a force to be reckoned with.' And, finally, from a Bama Board: 'Phillips is a nice little 3* WR. I'm sure Auburn would kill to have him. Gotta hand it to him, Croom is doing quite well in MS. He already got a commit from DE Fletcher Cox, that we wanted. But I will NEVER fear a Croom coached team. JPW was the ONLY reason Bama lost over there last year and Bama will only get better from there.'
