TR wrote: No shit. When I put my two oldest into McLeod Elementary School 2001-2003, it was a fine school, with lots of extracurricular activities for the kids and their parents. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the wife and I decided to put all our kids back into McLeod because we were trying to sell our house. The quality of education totally deteriorated by then. The principal and teachers were barely teaching the basics at every grade. We have our kids out in Hinds county schools now, and they're light years ahead of JPS, even though both systems are under the Hinds county School board. Until JPS can get their shit together and the Superintendent can provide strong leadership to improve the schools, many folks are going to stay in southern Hinds county, Rankin County, or Madison county. I liked what Ben Allen was saying. He was right in that Jackson has the same problems many cities of comparable size have had the past few years. However, until you give knuckleheads like Kenny Stokes the boot, many businesses will be afraid to locate in downtown. |

Sal & Mookies = best pizza in Jackson metro | #42 | ||

...and probably the state. I am hard pressed to recall a better pizza than what I have had there. Maybe a deep dish I had from Pizzaria Uno once, maybe.

Don't get me wrong, Fondren is my favorite area in Jackson. But if they put more restaurants like the ones you listed, a couple of bars that have beer on
tap that besides Bud, Miller, or Coors, and some interesting shops instead of using a lot of the commercial real estate for banks, multiple coffee shops, dry
cleaners, etc., it would be a lot better. A small venue for live music that doesn't attract acts like Kiss cover bands and the Bellamy Brothers would also
be a plus.

Sal and Mookie's is good but overpriced, but their beer selection is possibly the best in the area. It's the only place I've been able to order a
Rogue Dead Guy Ale in Jackson. If they had a few porters on the menu, that would be tremendous.

Rouge Dead Guy is outstanding. I get it on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Flowood, being the suburbanite that I am.

Did anyone eat where Sal and Mookies is when it was known as Jubilee? That place had amazing food.
Pizza Shack does rock, plus they sponsor the Saints..... |

Martin's should have it and other good beers too. But youre right, places to find micro brews and imports are few and far between in J-Town. |

I live in the Reservoir area and didn't know Mellow Mushroom had Dead Guy on tap. I'll have to start eating there now. Now if only I could find a
restaurant serving Rogue Mocha Porter and Brutal Bitter.
On a similar note, if you like craft beer, follow this link to a group trying to get the ban on beer above 5% ABW removed and get involved. "I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. I haven't been to Martin's yet. On the other hand, I would label Hal and Mal's as a redneck bar.

Shakespeare may be the best beer you can legally buy in Mississippi. As a matter of fact, I didn't know it was legal.

I would label Hal and Mal's as a redneck bar.I hate H&M as much as the next guy... but, I'll be damned if I think it's a redneck bar. Pop's Around the Corner? Yeah... THAT'S a redneck bar. And... one of the reasons I hate H&M so much is b/c they still advertise that they're a brewery. In fact, they haven't brewed since Katrina somehow managed to "knock out" their brewery. I don't buy that excuse and, to me, it shows their lack of dedication to doing that with any degree of competence. Plus, I can't stand having to pay a cover charge just to eat there... I do like their food. |
