Letting Rosinski go is a mistake... | #21
|
As has been stated before, he's probably the hardest working guy in the Media Relations department. Letting Pat Wallace, Bobby T and some others go, would
not be a mistake. Stans had a very good relationship with Rosinski and I am sure is not happy.

My guess | #22 | |||

is that Byrne wants to bring in his own people and has had certain people in mind for certain positions.

Saw this with Fogelsong, and now Byrne | #23

Everybody whines about how mediocre Mississippi State, how behind the times we are. Yet, when someone like Doc Fogelsong or Greg Byrne try to make Mississippi
State an excellent university, all the professors and other employees suddenly grow unibrows, buck teeth, tobaccy spittle, and whine, "DA'S NAWT DUH
WAY WE'S DUNN IT 'ROWND HERE 'FER!!!"

Remember when the girl's b'ball team was good in 1999-2000? | #24
|
I know, it's only girls. However, they had qualified to host one of the Pods in the NCAA Girls' basketball tournament. Yet, there was something else
going on in town. Larry Templeton couldn't or wouldn't do anything to accomodate the other girls teams and the dozens of fans they had come along with
them, so MState had to "host" the tourney from Oregon. If Greg Byrne was AD back then, he'd have probably found a way to get the tournament in
Starkville. So far, every move Byrne has made has been the right one. We need to cut him some slack until we see what his vision for MState will be.

I can't believe I am going to defend the nutless wonder that is LT, but us having to go to Oregon had nothing to do with what LT did or didn't do. It was simply a case of other events (non-university if I remember correctly) being in town and their not being enough hotel rooms available. And I'll echo what others have said - I think Rosinski getting let go is a huge mistake. His personality was a little unusual at times - he loves Gloria Estafan for goodness sakes - be he was a great guy and a hard worker. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did." "That's what makes WVU such a terrible place. You mix Jersey/Maryland reject guido douchebags with three-eyed cromagnon appalachian coal children, and you get the worst that the land of the free, home of the brave has to offer. A race of people so confused, so misguided, so insular... oooh....it sends a cold chill down my spine." - NutherT |

How hard is it for an Athletic Director to find room for 3 Girls basketball teams, coaching staff, and the dozen or so of their fans? The Microtel could've put them in the Janitor's closet on each floor. |

And that's what will always hold MSU back | #27
|
When someone comes in and makes the tough decisions people start complaining. "He made a mistake there. How dare he do that?" People are all for
change until the change comes and then they start complaining because there's actual change taking place. Wow, what a concept. You hire someone to change
the way the AD operates and then he actually does what you hired him for.
I have no knowledge of these people he fired, but it's decision. He will be judged on how the AD operates under him. |

There is an NCAA rule to have enough available hotel rooms... | #28
|
and the Starkville area did not have enough. State held the national or regional convention of college recruiters (like Roadrunner) that weekend. And if the
infamous Jimmy Abraham speech that played on MSU Channel 30 of "Right Now!! Right Now!!! Right Now!!!".
I support the two most frustrating teams in America: The New Orleans Saints and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Huge mistake | #29 | |||
|
Letting ANYONE go is rarely a huge mistake. Everyone is replaceable. It might be the waste of an otherwise good employee who could do a good job. It might
be a lot harder to train the new person than use the person who is already trained. It might be a poor use of human resources to get rid of someone who can do
a good job.
But, huge mistake? That terminology only applies to a termination of a minute fraction of the workforce. I think I do an outstanding job. But, huge mistake for my employer to fire me? -- nah. Go Dogs! |

in its sports information compacity. I think we have been weak in that aspect of the schools promotion for all sports all the way back to Hartley
I think everyone has had problems with the ticket office I know I am in my own little world but it's ok, they know me here. Beer, the reason I get up every afternoon. |

Since I was traveling with the UAB team that year, I am kind of glad I got to go to Oregon. Just wish we hadn't flown home after winning the POD and then
turn around two days later to fly back to Portland. Talk about dumb.

Problems? | #34 | |||

What has been the problem in media relations over the past 10 years, in your opinion? I've always heard they are one of the better run offices in the
league.

and ask - what has the dept. done well. do you think MSU sports are promoted adequately. maybe adequately but that is setting the bar very low.

Since the focus of the thread | #36

seems to be whether Byrne should be doing what he is doing with regard to personnel, I will weigh in on that first: I don't care. He can do what he wants
with the personnel reporting under him. That's his prerogative -- good, bad, fair, unfair. Whatever. He gets to build his team.
However, on the point of your email regarding the ticket office: I have never had any problems at all with the ticket office. I have always had courteous service, and had my expectations met and exceeded. Go Dogs! |

I have twice been told that I couldn't order full price season football tickets over the phone and I would have to mail in the order form that came in the brochure. That is beyond unacceptable. The first time, after expressing my shock that she would actually refuse to take an order from someone who was ready to give her his credit card number, she reluctantly took the order. The second time, I figured I'd better just do as she said and mail my order form in. That this could even happen is proof enough to me that that employee and her manger should both be fired at the very least. |

Re:SID | #38 | |||
|
Promotion is not the job of the SID, that would be marketing's responsibility.
The only complaint anyone can have in Media Relations over the years would be the website being horrendous for so many years and slow to be updated. Again, not media relations fault, they submit the stories and info and wait. SIDs are not supposed to be noticed and receive awards, the only publication awards in the field are the CoSIDA awards, which David usually one of the top in the Basketball Media Guides for his area. No david is not irreplaceable, he will be replaced..and it shall be interesting to see the route Greg goes for the hire of the hottest sport on campus. I can say that the SID dept has always been understaffed, and LT refused to hire anyone else, and now with david out, and i know another SID leaving on their own accord..the dept is extremly thin. |

Media Relations | #39 | |||
|
As Scooba said, if you're complaining about promotion, then blame marketing, not media relations. Marketing puts out the posters and schedule cards and
advertisements trying to get you to buy tickets, etc.
Has men's basketball garnered some national attention, had some national stories written? Have they had players get national honors? That's something that you attribute solely to the athlete/team, but the media contact does plenty behind the scenes to help that happen. Information has gotten up on the web quicker now that the school posts its own releases instead of having a webmaster off at the publisher's site post it when it comes through email. If you don't notice the media relations people, that's usually best. That means they are doing a great job. |
