other than Turner and Tatum that we've lost that is worth mentioning. Surely Im forgetting someone.
And I realize the draft was last week, but what about Jared Holloway going in the 10th round. Another promising Polk pitching signee that never panned out for us. |

Redshirting in Baseball is for players that are simply role players.... | #4

There are exceptions, usually pitchers that contribute after a redshirt year, but normally if you can't contribute as a true freshman, you may never see
the field and if you do contribute, you may only help the team for a max of two years.
If a freshman receives a lot of hype then comes in and stinks up the joint, and shows very few signs of improvement, he probably won't have the option to leave early. The players that have been studs for MSU and Ole Miss lately, Lynn, MSU's catcher last year who's name escapes me, Maholm, Cozart, Coghlan, I think Moreland, but I could be wrong, Head and Pettway all have been freshman that contributed their freshman year and they left after year three. You don't want players that can't contribute as freshman. |

I was just stating that we really haven't lost many as RS sophs which is another of the many signs that our program was talent deficient.
Not too mention the fact that if you redshirt someone that is likely an average player, you are tying up your schol money an extra year.

No, Clark left after his junior year.

You should never EVER redshirt a freshman who's getting any scholarship money. | #11
|
If he's not good enough to contribute immediately (not necessarily start but contribute) then you shouldn't have recruited him in the first place. Redshirts should only be used for walkons. As much as Polk bitched about the 11.7 scholarship limit, he sure didn't mind wasting a scholarship or two on a redshirt. |

If there are anymore......... | #12

.....pussies left on the team, they'll leave. They know they won't be able to get by with just being "good boys" anymore, and their new coach
won't make every excuse in the world for their lousy performance.

On Turner and Tatum | #14 | ||
|
For Tatum it was easy to see why he was redshirted. He could not hit as a freshman. He was not a great hitter in High School. It took him a year of
adjustments to be able to hit college pitching.
Now for Turner....all I heard was how good of a hitter he was. My question is why did we have two of the best catchers to ever play at state playing third and short in 2006, (since Rutledge and Keaton were total bust) with Diggs behind the plate....especially when Turner could have played short, TBerk at 3rd and Easley behind the plate. Speaking of Rutledge and Keaton.....Ever heard of Brian Dozier? Three year starter at Shortsop at USM. He wanted to come to state but was not offered because we were committed to keeping Rutledge and Keaton on scholarship. If you havent seen him play, take my word for it. Dozier would have been our shortstop the day that he walked on campus. He is a defensive wizard!!! Not too shabby with the bat either! "If you ain't First, your Last"....Ricky Bobby |

Maloney is our Wally Pipp | #15
|
And I have wondered the same thing about Turner. Our 2006 season could have been a lot different with him in the lineup. The excuse I heard, and you may
have heard as well, was that "he needed to make adjustments to his swing when he came to school". Now, since he is the son of a high school baseball
coach, I kind of found it hard to believe that his swing was all that bad. I don't buy that, though.

Todd4State wrote: Hey Todd, I agree with you too on this issue. There are so many players that we have missed out on in the last 7 years that you could make a minor league
all star team out of the guys who wanted to come to State but were not offered for some reason or other. I believe with all my heart that crap is over with
now, with the staff we are putting in place. I spoke with a college coach right after the news broke that Butch would be our pitching coach, his exact words
were, "Wow, what a staff"

Posts: 1016 05/12/08 09:49 PM he gives it another shot with another staff just to see what happens. If he is drafted at all, it will be low because of his injuries and the fact that the only position he can play is 2B. It probably would be worth his while to return. I say let the old team go. I mean Polk's reign is over. It doesn't do much good to keep bashing the guys he brought in. I could understand if they were
professionals, but this is college baseball where they have to foot the bill for the majority of their tuition.
