Let that sink in.
Yep... Continuity is what we need. There's someone in my head but it's not me. |

The only surprise there | #4
|
is that we weren't already mathmatically eliminated going into the weekend. Also, missing the SECT 3 times in 5 years doesn't really tell the full
story. We barely snuck in with a 13-16 record in 1 of the 2 years we did make the tournament during that time span. And in the other, our best year in the
last 5, we were 15-13 with a schedule that didn't include the league champs and had 2 fewer road games than home games.

with a guy who could possibly miss Hoover for the 4th time in 5 years? Yeah I know it's UK. I still believe that while Cohen would be a decent hire, MSU
baseball could do alot better.

If I was a MSU fan I would be pleased with the Cohen hire. I am just saying I think MSU baseball can go after some of the big boys who are more proven and have a better body of work than Cohen. I would target 3 or 4 of the big boys and if they aren't interested, happily offer the job to Cohen. I just don't think he has done enough to be the clear cut choice of a well established top 15 baseball job in America like MSU. Think of a program with a similar history of MSU. Would John Cohen be their top choice? I think he would be on a lot of short lists but not necessarily at the top of them. |

I really love the fact he played here though. That tips the scale for me toward him. He also doesnt play "Polk ball".
I am impressed by his winning at Kentucky. As a former baseball player, there is no way in hell i'd want to go there to play baseball. Getting players there shows you can really recruit. So having our history and facility to help sell with what he possesses, really makes me think he could do great things here.

I'll say this | #13 | ||
rebel law wrote: I don't know that we could do much better than Cohen in all honesty. He is one of the top young coaches in the country, and while I do think that we
could get someone equally as good, which I would be fine with if it's not Cohen and not someone like Raffo. As far as the big boys, Augie Garrido is
probably the best in the country in my opinion and he is ancient. Same thing could be said about Mike Martin at FSU and Gene Stephenson at Wichita State.
Even if they are younger than Polk, I don't think that they would come because they are pretty well set where they are. I would like George Horton, but I
doubt he would leave Oregon after he has made a commitment to them to build their program. I don't think Pat Murphy would leave Arizona State. Tim Corbin
would be worth talking to.

Who cares if he has MSU ties? | #14

I want us to hire the absolute best we can (Pat Casey), regardless of whether he has MSU ties.
Cohen would be a decent hire, but we could do much better. If everyone better says no, then sure, talk to Cohen. But his MSU ties shouldn't elevate him any higher than he would be without them. |

I would love to get Casey, but I would be very pleasantly surprised if he left Oregon State. He has lived in Oregon his whole life, he will be treated like a legend there from now on, and his son plays there right now. |

I'm not concerned with Kentucky. If y'all want to hire John Cohen without so much as calling any of the other more qualified candidates out there, by
all means go right ahead. And my post had absolutely nothing to do with Ole Miss so I don't see the point in responding to that.

hiring Cohen without talking to anyone else? I think Cohen would be a great hire but his number is not the only one that should be dialed.
And I think when people are spouting stats about Cohen, the first two years shouldn't even be considered. I get tired of hearing, "he's only been to the tourney 1 out of his first 4 years." Its obvious he's a far better coach than what 7 conf. wins represents.

You can't have a discussion on here and even suggest that MSU should look in another direction. Hell I was trying to have a normal discussion and somehow
Ole Miss gets brought up? There are parameters now apparently too? The 7 conf. win seasons don't count but the 20 conf win season does count? Does the 13
win season last year count? John Cohen has proven to me that he can dominate a weak non conference schedule on a year in year out basis, that is about it. In 5
SEC seasons he has had 1 season that would be considered "good" by MSU standards and they choked in the postseason. You have to consider what he
inherited but at the same time you have to consider what he has done. You are all ASSUMING that a sub .500 SEC record at UK translates into going to the CWS
every couple of years at MSU. If you want to hire a coach based on assumptions and potential and not results then John Cohen is your guy. He could set the
world on fire at MSU but his results thus far don't make him a "can't miss" candidate in my eyes. Apparently I have a higher opinion of
MSU's baseball program than most of you do.
