This season cannot end soon enough. Hopefully we will have our new coach announced by the beginning of summer, enjoy a tad of optimism, assuming our dozen
injured players come back next year, and also assuming the new coach isn't Raffo, which it will be, so I don't even know why the hell I'm posting
this. Then we can turn our attention to football season, thank God.
Amazing how the thought process was 180 degrees different this time last year.

"You believe a 4-seed Fresno State was as talented through and through as Georgia (top SS, top closer, and several other
draftees)?" - WillemWallace, 7-10-08, just weeks after Fresno State outscored Georgia 31-18 in the College World Series Finals to win the National

after a so called "national search", it will only be because everyone else in the national search said no thanks. I just cannot believe that will
happen. I really believe that there are only 15 or 20 head coaches in D1 baseball that would turn this job down if it were offered. Assuming, that is, that
the pot gets sweetened to around a half a mil. I have had people tell me we can't afford that, but I call bullshit. We will have to come up with more
than the 300K that Polk is making, and I think that can and will be done.

To reply to several:
Why do people forget about what Cohen has done a Missouri and Northwestern State? Mizzou was a once proud program that had fallen on hard times (they have a NC, I believe in the 50's) and Cohen helped turn them around. Yes, they only made one or two Regionals, but that was when it was a LOT harder to make a Regional than it is now. That was also his first job, and that was when the Big 8 was around, which was a pretty good conference even before they added the Texas schools. He had winning seasons practically every year he was there. He took Northwestern State to two Regionals. That means he practically had to either win the regular season title or the postseason tournament to get there. That's not exactly an easy place to win. He had to compete with LSU, Tulane, La-Monroe (which had a pretty good program then), La. Tech, and La-Lafayette among others for players. Then he goes to UF as their hitting coach with Pat McMahon (Guess who he left behind at MSU?). When he was their hitting coach, he was arguably the best hitting coach in the conference. After he left, they did go to the NC round of the CWS, but then they tailed off drastically. After that he takes over a UK program that was arguably the worst in the SEC, in a region that has very little baseball talent per capita, at a school that only cares about basketball, he was able to take a team that had a losing record his first year and made then SEC Champions the next year. They didn't make a Regional last year, but they are certainly in line to make one this year, and are probably going to be in the mix to host a Regional depending on the last three weeks of the season and SEC Tournament for them. As far as the money, I would do what I could to help make sure that we can get the best baseball coach possible. Of course I'm not a cigar boy, but the MSU fans need to make a financial commitment to the next coach. Polk is paid about 300,000 (little less 295,000 I believe). That means that the BC would have to raise about 250,000-300,000 dollars. Or roughly 300 people giving 100 dollars, which most of us should be able to afford. And yes, after the horseshit we've put up with, I certainly believe it's a worthwhile investment. We're not talking about trying to lure Bill Bellicheck to MSU for 50 million dollars or anything like Bama did with Saban. By the way, a subscription to GP costs about 100 bucks, and I think this would be a good way to spend that 100 bucks "differently". I know I sure like winning at baseball a hell of a lot more than knowing that Chris Garrett likes extra meat on his pizza. |

300 x $100 = $300,000?
In all seriousness, I agree with everything you just said. If Cohen ends up being the man I'll be extremely happy. However, we shouldn't begin and end our search with him even if he is ready to accept right now, which I don't think you're saying. This should be an interesting process as this is one time a Mississippi school can conduct a coaching search and there not be a single name that can be dismissed without some thought, Oregon State's coach included. There isn't a college baseball coach in the country whose name we could throw around for the position that is the equivalent of OM begging for Dennis Erickson.
So maybe the new meaning of "Croomed" should be you just got your ass beat. And, given time, Sylvester is going to do it to you again. --Dan Wetzel

I've said it before, I'll say it again. If Raffo is so 17-ing great, then why hasn't he be hired as a head coach ANYWHERE ?
Cohen or Kinnison, they know what winning championships are about. They strive to earn them.

Someone on Dawgsbite had an good post on Steve Smith. | #38 | ||
|
His accomplishments at Baylor the last 13 years ( 1cws, 3 supers, 9 regionals) are less than the last 13 at MSU( 3 cws, 3 supers, 12 regionals). Also Baylor is
only 25-20 this year. I don't get the Steve Smith hype other than he isn't Raffo.

to compare state and baylor straight up in an effort to show what kind of coach steve smith is.
Over the last 8 years, ole miss has been 3 supers and no CWS and state has been to 3 supers and 1 CWS....but I doubt anyone would question Bianco's ablity to run a program. |

The only reason I came to school at State was to sit in right field and watch baseball. Not for the women, not for Landscape Architecture, not for my future. I
came to watch baseball. If Raffo gets the job im dropping out of school.
