When I was a student at State, my best friend and I were driving back to Starkville from Jackson late at night. Highway 25 was barely getting started on 4-laning, so I took the Natchez Trace to Highway 12 route. It was the night of January 1st or 2nd, and no one was on the roads. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere on Highway 12, I think south of Ackerman, a car came speeding up behind us with its bright lights on. Now, being a college kid I might have flipped him off, but didn't this time. He followed for a while and I slowed down to let him pass. While he was passing me the interior light came on in his car and I saw a kid driving and a guy in the passenger seat loading a shotgun. I didn't know what to do so I just hit the brakes. They pulled in front of me diagonally, blocking both lanes of the 2-lane road, and this old man jumped out and started yelling at me. I lowered the window and he pointed the shotgun right at my head. He was MAD, and his hands were shaking. He was yelling that I had driven through his yard and dug tire tracks in his grass. I hadn't, and tried to tell him that. I got out to show him I didn't have mud on my car, but then I saw I did have a little, and he got madder and shakier. After about 2-3 minutes of him yelling and me repeatedly telling him I didn't do it and that we were just coming back from Jackson, he grumbled and got back in his car and they sped off. I just got back in my car and drove back to Starkville.
I realized later just how close I came to getting shot in the head, especially with him shaking so much. Good thing I didn't flip him off when he was behind me, or he might have shot out my rear window.
Strange thing when I got back to Starkville that night. My friend lived in Wood Manor off Highway 12, and when we got to his place we decided to go the Omelet Shoppe. Right at Wood Manor this Starkville police car got right behind me and followed me all the way to the Omelet Shoppe, then drove by really really slowly when we pulled into the parking lot. Then a little bit later when we were still there he drove by again slowly. Didn't see him again after that, but that just added on to a weird night.
