then they expect you to "give back"?
For too long, everyone blames the alums ("You can't pick up 105.9? Get a better radio!"..... "You gave $20,000-50,000 to graduate from State and are still paying on your student loans well into your 30's? YOU NEED TO GIVE MORE!!"....MSU staff, administration, and Starkville townies treat you like shit the whole time you were there? YOU NEED TO GIVE BACK BECAUSE OF ALL THOSE FOND MSU MEMORIES!!!!!!!!!"). Maybe with Greg Byrne at the helm, some of the things MState did to piss off all those students and alums might get undone. |

I can understand if it was only 8% give back to the school of business, those bastards call me on a weekly basis. Just about all of my buddies that went to
state are members of the Bulldog Club, that number just sounds pretty low. But hell, with this economy, I hear from someone I know on a weekly basis that has
been downsized from their job. It is a tough time to be trying to get any type of donation from anyone.

Only had a $1000 student loan from my year at Millsaps. I just know some MState grads who owe $10,000-20,000 when they get out of school. Yeah, it's
cheaper than a lot of 4 year colleges, but it's still way more expensive than your average JUCO.

the tuition at MSU and the accompanying fees and even the cost of living is not a financial screwing that is lowered down on our students. It's
actually pretty affordable. To say that we "stick it to our students" financially and that's the reason they all leave MSU sour and won't
give is ridiculous.

There are a bunch of reasons people don't give. There are folks that don't give a crap about their alma mater. There are people who don't give a crap about the athletics of their alma mater. There are people who are disapointed in the product they see. And there are those who go to some games, but just aren't going to give. There is a certain % who probably can't see a way financially to give. Lots of reaons not to give. |

I'm really sorry you had such a piss poor four years of college. Personally, they were the best 4 I had spent up to that time and remain as some of the best in my life. So, I'll continue to be part of that 8% being discussed. |

Millsaps with Financial Aid and MState without were about the same cost. However, Millsaps had all their costs upfront so you knew what you had to pay.
MState would hide their costs and hit you piecemeal.

but it keeps getting more and more bizarre. Admittedly, there is a 20 year period or so that I am unaware of MSU billing procedures. However, having just
paid for a freshman, I didn't get any suprises in timing or amount. And I didn't have any the entire time I was at MSU. I know there have been times
they were late announcing the tuition amounts, mostly because they had to wait on the damn legislature.
But, hell, it pissed you off so damn bad that you think that this is one of the wholesale reasons people would have for not giving back. I have to tell you that my surprise at the time of my admission was just how student oriented the whole damn town and university was. Now, I know: Duh. It's a University -- it's designed for students. But, having just come out of high school I didn't have that expectation. We don't piss off our students so bad en mass that they don't want to give back. That's preposterous. What is a fair statement, though, is that most of our students are exposed to a poor football product, which builds no long term loyalty. On the other hand, the baseball and basketball programs have been good enough to create good lasting memories for students. |

I think the stockpiling of money that is going on right now in college athletics is out of hand. The bigger schools are using this just to tell recruits
"hey we have more money look what I can do". The money that you donate is not being used for scholarships or books but to buy bigger prettier
things. I like to say we can compete with the Texas and Florida's of the world but we simply don't have nearly enough alumni as those huge schools to
compete in the "whose dick is bigger" game. I will contribute by buying tickets to football, basketball, and baseball games, by spending money in
the Starkville community and at University functions. I will buy MSU clothing and show my support 365 days a year. I will tell everyone I know how great a
school it is and I will actively recruit MSU to kids trying to decide on a college. If I am rich then hopefully one day I will send a lot of money to State
but that day is not today.

I think what he means by the JUCO route is it's a lot easier to get a full scholarship there and then some- you can save the extra money from that and any
extra scholarships from HS that let you keep the money and apply that to the 4 year you choose or whatever. And I don't know about others that went there,
but I had a larger scholarship offer from State coming out of JUCO than coming out of HS. Cut down on the expense of it tremendously- I really can't
imagine how my friends' families really afforded to send their kids for 4+ years, especially those that did so without relying on loans.
What's crazy is most didn't even have to hold jobs down until they were about juniors. And they're the ones that are out every night of the week. It's easy to see how a lot of these people probably have ridiculous loans to pay back. |

Sure you can get English and Chemistry out of the way but if you go into any classes like Engineering, you are behind by a year with all your electives taken
up. All those classes you have to have your freshman year, you are taking as a junior. Unless you are majoring in something that doesn't have classes
that build on each other, it is a waste to spend more than one year at a juco.

It probably depends I guess. I was lucky and knew the dept. head for Biological Sciences, so I'd call every now and then and get his recommendations. I
ended up going into Kinesiology for PT school stuff, so it wasn't as bad for me as it can be for others. I was as far or further along than most of the
others in my class in that major.
There are definitely some good classes you can knock out there, though- Chem I and II, Physics I and II, Organic, etc. Trig, I think Calculus (as long as you're allowed to do it there). A lot of your sciences. It can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it. I made sure to knock a lot of sciences out and what math I could, and the things I had left were things I was interested in anyway. DEFINITELY talk to an advisor at the four year you want to go to and stay on top of what you need to do and what will be left waiting for you. Lot of work, but it will make a difference. |

I think a higher percentage of people from Mississippi are somewhat lazy when compared to other states. I think alot of it has to do with the weather being so
hot, but who knows? Energy levels are different. You not only see this in giving to the University, but you see it in attendance as well. I think people
like Mutt find reasons that are absurd, but truth is most have the money but are to lazy to set the payments up. Lots of couch potatoes in Mississippi that
make excuses for themselves. That's not to say that there are not positives though. Family values and hospitality are two that come to mind. We choose
to live outside the state though. I am a member of the Bulldog club and I give $250 per year. I know it is not much, but its all my wife will allow.
Mississippi State fans really need to wake up as apathy and making excuses for apathy are rampant in Mississippi. Unfortunately, much of its reputation is
warranted but only truly visible by living somewhere else. JMO

I'm with you. If you are going into engineering school I would only take electives or simple core classes like speech, english comp 1 and 2 at a juco. I
think all science and math classes should be taken at the school you are going to acquire your degree from. I've seen too many people come in from the juco
route and be farther ahead than I am credit wise but struggle in the core classes because the material they learned at the juco did not cover the same material
at MSU.
But I don't argue against it if it is best for the family to send their child to juco first so they can get the financial situation under control. |
