It absolutely kills me. They said they woke up to find the snake was not in his enclosure and ran to their toddlers room where they found the snake wrapped
around the toddler which was dead.
This should be a criminal offense of child endangerment. The parents should be locked up. The parents have essentially taken the life of a child |

I've known people to get rid of a dog or cat when they have a baby... | #4
|
if they think the dog or cat won't take kindly to a new child. Yet, these people don't think that a snake in the house with a baby MIGHT not be the
best idea.
I've got no problem with people that want to have pet snakes. I don't want one, but that's your deal if you want to have one in the house. However, if you are bringing a baby into that house, you might want to consider selling your snake or at least giving it to a friend or relative. |

I have had snakes since I was 10. | #8
|
I have had Boa Constrictors, Corn Snakes, King Snakes, And I now have a Ball Python. Other than the Boa Constrictor the max length of these other snakes is
about 6 ft. They are not big enough to hurt any human.
Just stay away from the snakes that can get large like Boas and Burmese Pythons and obviously anything poisonous. |

Should ALL parents of children who died from accidents be tried for murder??? | #9
|
Let's count the ways children die shall we, TV's fall on them, cars back over them, gun accidents, falling down stairs, pools, venetian blind cords,
electric shock, tripping and banging their head, falling off bikes, running in the road, shall I go on??? One snake kills a kid and all of a sudden the parents
are monsters who should go to the electric chair for having a snake. Give me a fugging break. ACCIDENTS happen every day. It's worse enough that the child
died, but people like you just make it worse. Should people just live in a bubble these days so that an accident will never happen?? Oh yeah, they can't
even do that because plastic will give the kids cancer and you'll want the death chair for the parents for being such wreck-less meth head parents.

Humans maybe, but 2 year old babies are different. | #11
|
It doesn't take a huge snake to kill a 2 year old. Like I said, I have no problem with people owning snakes. It's not for me, but if you like them as
pets, that's no big deal. I do think it's stupid to not get rid of your snake though if you're bringing a baby into the house.

So, should people also get rid of their, stairs, hard candy, bananas, cars, bikes, roads, electricit | #12

dogs, contact with other human beings with viruses, tvs, heavy book cases, knives, stoves, venetian blinds, slippery floors, corners, desks, air, blankets,
belts, plastic bags, tree limbs, baseballs, bats, etc etc (yes all things that have been involved in accidental deaths). Americans are becoming such pussies
these days.

a snake is not. I did not say tried for murder. I said endangerment. They did not kill the kid but they allowed the situation in which the child was killed.

#1 -- don't get a big enough snake to kill a child. Ball python..... only python worth owning. Rocks and Burs gets wayyyyyyyyy to big to keep inside. |

at the same time should it be ok for parents to | #15
|
leave loaded guns out, bare electrical wires, and knives on the floor when they have a young child that doesn't know any better in the house? The issue
isn't as black and white as you think it is. There could've been a lot more done to prevent this. If you have an animal in the house that could
potentially harm a sleeping child, you should at the very least keep the child and the pet locked up in separate rooms at night.

No, but.... | #16 | ||
|
if you have a dog that doesn't take well to the child, you get rid of him no questions asked. My wife's parents had to get rid of their dog when she
was born because the dog would nip at her and would basically treat her like it needed to establish dominance. That's very dangerous for an infant.
As to your point on stairs, you put up gates when they start walking. You don't let them have hard candy until they reach a certain age where they can handle it. You can tether bookcases to the wall, as I've done in my house at least with the ones that are unstable enough to topple. You can put child safety locks on your cabinets, especially the ones with the cleaning supplies. You can shorten the strings on your blinds so that they are out of reach. You can remove potentially dangerous furniture. It's called child proofing. Yes, there are certain things that cause accidental deaths or injuries that you can't really prevent, but there are certain things that you can do that are just common sense. If you have a snake that's big enough to strangle a 2 year old to death, and you have a baby, then you should get rid of your snake, or at least find some separate place away from the house to keep it. Give it to a friend or family member if you have one that's willing to take it and keep it as their own. And honestly, in the first couple months of a baby's life, it's wise to limit contact in public places as well, because they haven't fully developed their immunities yet. Sure, you can take a lot of risks with your child. You can take a 1 month old to a baseball game or football game, but I wouldn't advise it. Aside from the lack of immunities they have at that age, the heat can be dangerous. If it makes me a pussy that I want to do everything in my power to keep my child safe, then call me a pussy. I love my daughter more than myself, so I'm willing to sacrifice things on occasion for her benefit. |

It sounds like an accident. | #17
They said they woke up to find the snake was not in his enclosure and ran to their toddlers room where they found the snake wrapped around the toddler which was dead. According to that quote above it sounds like the snake WAS in another room inside an enclosure. They had to run from one room to another to get to the toddlers room. So, it sounds like the snake got out of an enclosure, traveled from one room to another, climbed inside the toddlers bed or crib and strangled the kid. It doesn't sound like the parents left the snake in the kids bed. It sounds like a tragic accident, but no more then that. I don't think the parents need any more punishment then what they are already going through.

Stairs - if you have a wooden stair case and a 1 year old just learning to walk, and you don't have a gate or something precluding access to the stairs,
yes, you are a moron.
There is absolutely no way you have kids. Its just not possible. For you to read this story and the replies, and for you to have a thought that people that
think it is retarded to have a python in the house with a baby, are somehow pussies, is just ridiculous.

There is a line you can cross that goes from being a responsible parent to being OCD. | #19
|
The playgrounds, neighborhoods and communities used to be filled with the sound of children playing and having fun. Now all the children are locked inside
their houses playing Xbox safe and sound with their antibacterial hand sanitizer and mommy and daddy close at hand to wipe away the staph every ten minutes.
It's pretty sad to see the neighborhood streets empty. It's a little too much. Children have to be allowed to experience life. At what point do you let
them go?

Children come before pets. Period. | #20
|
If my child had so little of a thing as a cat allergy we would not have cats. If my dog was ever agressive to any person he would be gone. I'm not saying
pets should be killed. They should be given to someone who will take care of it properly. As long as the pet is loved, it makes no difference where. Keep
children safe. they're defenseless
