I agree with most of what everyone is saying, but one thing does piss me off. I like how everyone now say hiring Polk the second time was a mistake. He had
just taken Georgia to the CWS and when Mac left, these message boards were begging Polk to come back. If you remember, Polk office phone number got out on
interner and all the MSU fans called and filled up his voice mail. I thing Cohen is going to get this thing turned around and thinking about Polk the last few
years makes me sick. I like all the geniuses (sp) now that knew it was a bad move, when they were the ones cheering the hire.

You're right that most of our fan base was clamoring for Polk to come back. Most of our fanbase at the time also thought LT was the greatest AD ever for
"keeping us in the black."
However, many of us realized Polk had quit on our program TWICE before and wanted to go in a new direction. If this message board had existed when Polk came back I'm willing bet it would have been 50/50 as opposed to the 90/10 on GP.

there were a solid number of people questioning bringing Polk back. I was one. I didnt shout it from the rooftops as being a mistake like I did Crooms, but I
wanted new blood in the program back then. And I know former players that did too. LT took the easy way out and it cost us.
LT's legacy- Polk II and Crooms- LT should be spit on in public for those two

For many of us, it's not hindsight. | #25

Coach34 is right that there were lot of message board posters, even on Gene's Page, that very much did not want Polk back. I thought from the beginning
that re-hiring him was a train wreck waiting to happen. I saw enough of Polk ruining our program in the 1990s before he brought McMahon back to get us back on
track to know I never wanted to see him in Starkville again except in the visiting dugout.

Fired after last CWS | #26

I am sure I am not the only one who thought that he should have been fired then, know you couldn't without horrible press, but did anyone think it was anything but lucky run? |

I don't know how you can look at the talent on that team and think is was luck that got them to the CWS any more than the luck that just about every team
needs to get there. Did the pitching staff perform a little over their heads in the regional and super? Probably. However, people seem to forget our late
season slide corresponded with some injuries, most notably losing Turner's bat for a few weeks. As soon as Brandon returned to the line up the offense
really picked it up.
Having guys like Turner, Moreland, Easley and Weatherford got that team to Omaha more than luck did.

you just dont realize how much that last part is the truth. But it was luck.
Those same players you just listed are the ones I have been told over and over called a players only meeting and said <17> the polk shit, we arent going out like this..and they didnt. for that last month or so of the season, we started hitting and running, stealing, and bunting. Polk be damned..and we won. |

While we had some pretty good offensive and defensive players, | #30

we didn't have enough of them and our pitching staff was average at best (and I'm being extremely kind to call that pitching staff average). When your top 4 starting pitchers have ERAs of 4.51, 6.02, 4.69, and 5.72, you're pretty damn lucky if you make it to the CWS. And if you watched the CWS at all that year, it was painfully obvious which 1 of the 8 teams wasn't like the others. |
