Posts: 5930 06/22/09 04:06 PM	Tags : None From the lastest BDJ article on Mullen "We are six months through a new program and I'm not sure our attrition is complete just yet," said Coach Mullen in regards to knowing how many roster spots will be open this fall. "I hope it is because I'm pleased with the guys we have here, but it is usually a full year cycle before you find out who is in and who is out with a new program. "There have not been many guys so far and that kind of shocks me because the off season workouts are no picnic over there, that's no day in the park. That just shows the desire our kids have to want to win." Doesn't surprise me. If there's anything Croom's team did well it was not quit - in games not called Egg Bowl 2008.

Posts: 678 06/22/09 07:16 PM	I never said Croom left him talent. Croom inherited some talented headcases. Mullen doesn't have the talent, but he doesn't seem to have as many headcases either. Winning starts in the mind. It's an attitude. I think Mullen can build a winning team quicker since he doesn't have to root out the ones who don't want to win in the classroom, on the football field and in life. Sure, he's going to have to recruit some talent to get there. But, I think he has a solid base to build from.

See, for every headcase Croom ran off, there's a guy currently on a NFL roster. Mullen inherited a bunch of guys who will try hard because they know they are currently at the only SEC school they could hope to play at. It's easy to get effort from guys who realize it's this or nothing. Guys like Nick Turner and Darren Williams. Guys unwilling to do simple shit that it takes to win in life like go to class. Vince Lombardi, in his famous speech What It Takes To Be Number One, said "Winning is not a sometimes thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing." Winning starts with doing the little things right. Croom knew that. Mullen knows that. Every good coach knows that. Yes, talent is extremely important. But, at least Mullen is able to start with a team that pretty much has the right mindset - talented or not. That's the base success is built from. And I think Mullen can go ahead and build the house on the attitudinal foundation that Croom left. That's all I'm saying.

He was hired to win in a reasonable time frame or be gone. This time there will at least be an urgency to win ASAP. He may not get it done but I`ll assure you everyone knows the deal.

Nick was no boy scout and probably wouldnt have made it, but shit like that was done because Crooms didnt give a shit about winning the first couple of years. I'm betting this wasnt done is year 3 or 4. No. Nick Turner was run off for telling a coach to go 17 himself when the coach told him to do his strength and conditioning work. And then he completely blew off the meeting with Crxxm. He wasn't a minute or two late. He never showed. I won't argue that Sherrill left Crxxm with several really talented players, but I honestly can't think of more than 1 or 2 that Crxxm ran off that had any damn business being on a college football team. In fact, the only one that comes to mind immediately is Calvin Wilson, who was a Crxxm recruit. There's plenty of legitimate stuff to criticize Crxxm for, but the one thing he did get right was to take control of the asylum back from the inmates.

I used to mentor a high school boy's group in Hattiesburg and he used to come around sometimes. I always thought he was soft and had no heart. Just a big kid. I guess that's okay. You don't have to be a football player just because you're big. If your heart is not in it .... Sad to see potential NFL talent go to waste though.
