Posts: 1365 06/19/09 09:51 PM King of Pointless Knowledge Played at Meridian High	Tags : None We had the chance to get Paul Mainieri as our Head Coach when Pat MacMahon left for Florida. Remember that nice article he wrote while head coach at Notre Dame? I thought to myself that was the guy who would be great here. Thanks to Larry "No Chin" Templeton We get POLK II instead, getting a coach who didn't want to be here, who didn't want to work to make the team better, and who was happy barely getting to the SEC tournament and letting USM and OM pass us in baseball (probably because he thought it was good for baseball in Mississippi). With Mainieri at the helm, we'd probably already have 2 CWS titles, and be playing for a 3rd next week.

Besides the fact that he recommended himself as the guy to replace Pat McMahon, what other school would allow a coach to do what he did all the while laughing it off. For example: "Stephen Head must not be that good, because we didn't recruit him." "There goes Polk again- after the NCAA! LOL!" My personal favorite- "Ron Polk knows more about baseball than you have forgotten about baseball". "Wait till Polk gets rid of McMahon's players." (They were the ones keeping us afloat, and they were being coached down.) Another personal favorite from KB21 (who I will admit is a much better poster on Bulldawg Junction) "Leaning into pitches is not baseball". My reply (and last post on GP to this day) "Neither is standing there and taking three pitches down the pipe." Personal favorite from a player last season- "Coach Polk tells us that people that yell at us hate themselves and their jobs and they take their frustrations out on us." (It has nothing to do with six errors. It was the fact that I had a bad day at work). And let's face it- the fact that Polk even had his successor to be even illigitmately interviewed was too far. We were coming off of a 23 win season, let's keep the staff from that season intact. We don't want to hurt anyone's feelings by firing them for doing a crappy job. I believe that both Raffo and McNickle found jobs less than a month later. But yes- Manieri would have been a great replacement for McMahon. Nothing agianst McMahon, I thought he did a pretty good job overall, but I never thought he would be able to take us to a NC. I think Manieri probably could have. I would have loved to be wrong and still have Polk as our coach, but I wasn't. However, we are MState...there's no way Mainieri wins a NC here. Is it wrong for me to pull for Texas? The anti-Cohen crowd used that as evidence against Cohen's entire character and a reason not to hire him. For the record, State finished tied for 4th in HBP with 71. What's funny is that Tommy Raffo's team, Arkansas State, had 75 HBP in 2009, 8 more than MSU. Here are the SEC rankings for 2009: Hit by pitch ------------ 1. Alabama............. 75 2. Kentucky............ 71 3. Vanderbilt.......... 69 4. Mississippi State... 67 Tennessee........... 67 6. Florida............. 66 7. Auburn.............. 63 8. Ole Miss............ 58 9. Bullcrap. Sydney signing might mean a Sweet 16, but little else (just for the record, I don't think Sydney will ever set foot on the Hump hardwood). But Cohen will deliver. Give Cohen time, & he will have MSU baseball back to where MSU baseball belongs. That, of course, means in Omaha. So I can't get pissed about this year, because, unlike Mullen & Stansbury, Cohen is going to eventually deliver.

I don't think LSU winning the NC would necessarily mean that he would definately go to LSU, but it certainly wouldn't help our cause. Not just with Barlow, but in the future as well. Polk was very hesitant about coming back to Starkville. he wanted to get back into coaching, but was looking around. Larry Templeton went and basically told him if he was coming back then he was coming to MSU. He talked him into it, bottom line.

He thought that MSU fans would let him do whatever, and he knew LT would let him do whatever, as long as the team made a regional. I heard an urban legend that Manieri was trying to get an interview, but of course, LT blew him off to get "the Legend" back. I still stand by my original story. Heck, I think LT even recounted the event as I told it at Polk's press conference in 2001.
