I think we know where the rebuilding begins. The mound.

I'm not real familliar with baseball recruiting, so are there good players | #1
|
out there who have not signed yet? It seems late, but I have zero idea how baseball recruiting works.

This guy | #2 | ||

has been committed, but we're just now officially announcing the signing.

The difference with baseball is there are so many players JC and High school and what Cohen is doing | #3
|
is basically a numbers game. He is going to have so many players to choose from he will find some good pitchers and hitters and kick the rest to the curb. He
is playing the system to the max and i love it. I am telling you he will field a good team next year. It's almost like spring training in the majors bring
in a zillion players and pick the best.

can you cut the guys you sign to scholarships like that? | #4
|
is there no baseball APR or whatever? And I thought you had to keep them for at least a year

You don't have to keep signees at all. | #6
|
As someone else mentioned, Cohen's playing a numbers game. He's trying to get as many pitchers that have a chance to be decent as he can to try out
for the team this fall. The ones that don't make it shouldn't count against the APR since they were never on the team (or at least never on the 35-man
roster limit).

so you can sign them to a scholarship then not honor it? | #7

I thought that was a no-no.
Maybe not.

You didn't think Nutt was going to honor all 39,000 scholarships he signed last February, | #8
|
did you? Cohen's basically doing the same thing in baseball.

You're overlooking that fact that we may not even be trying to sign good players at this point. Almost anyone that still hasn't signed could probably
be no worse than the players we had on the mound this past season.

no, but that's because they won't qualify | #10
|
not because we are kicking them off the team, and a few are getting greyshirts.

The greyshirts will qualify. | #11

And Nutt is most definitely telling them they're off the team, at least for this year (unless they decide they want to pay their own way in which case he
might take them). And while he'll probably honor those scholarships in the future, he's got no obligation to.
Edit to add that I'm not criticizing Nutt in any way. Signing that many players was perfectly legal at the time and I don't have any problem with it at all. I just threw his name out there because he oversigned just like Cohen is doing. |

I'm going to look into this | #12
|
because I'm not sure, but the same thought crossed my mind- especially when it looks like we're about to cut 90% of the team.
One thing that may make a difference is the fact that most baseball players aren't on full scholarships. The other thing about this is the answer may not be out there. It seems to me like the NCAA kind of half-assed a lot of the baseball stuff because there are things that are coming up that they hadn't thought of- like they were supposed to decide last week whether or not guys that have injuries would count against the 35 man roster limit. "This league doesn't care how hard you try. This league cares about having real players who can perform certain skills. If you try to throw a fastball in and you miss the middle of the plate, the league doesn't care that you're a really good kid. The game says you better execute the pitch." - John Cohen |

It's also possible that while the article said he signed a scholly, maybe he didn't | #13

and is really coming with a chance to earn one in camp.

The only stipulation that I am aware of is that the roster gets down to 35 at some point after fall practice. At this juncture we should call it a tryout.
Maybe that's how the NCAA treats it. I'm sure all players and signees know the score by now. If you are willing to go into it knowing you may not get
a spot, then I don't see a problem. If you don't think you can make it, then go somewhere else.
A lot of teams oversign. Every team is going to have busts, and you shouldn't be obligated to keep them on the team if they aren't going to contribute. This way, you have the chance to trade up. Over the years, Polk had way too many players that rode the bench for 4 years. That was doable before the 35 man rule, but not now.
