(AP) - Mississippi State women's basketball coach Sharon Fanning is up for a raise and a contract extension. The state College Board will consider a proposed raise from $167,092 to $230,000 and a two-year contract extension at its meeting Wednesday and Thursday. The board's approval is usually a formality and the extension would push Fanning's contract to 2013, the longest allowed under state law. Fanning, in her 33rd year as a head coach, guided the Bulldogs to a 23-10 record and the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. She has won 556 career games at Tennessee-Chattanooga, Kentucky and Mississippi State, with 233 of those victories while in Starkville. One good season

Posts: 3819 06/17/09 07:56 AM Literally a Cocksucker Recruitnik	I think if I was an AD, I would try to find a nice cheap coach for the women's basketball program and let them win or lose for 10-15 years without concern. I'd save more money for the football and men's basketball programs. No one goes to women's games anyway, so I would assume that the return you get for ponying up for a coach is probably negative. I'd imagine at both our schools that the attendance difference between a 10-20 season and an NCAA tournament season is probably on a thousand or so fans total for the whole year if that.

Don't forget she was basically cheated out of the Sweet 16 by those Ohio State officials. I think the men's and women's teams have a great shot at advancing at least to the Sweet 16 this year.

State had not even come close to having a winning season in SEC basketball until Sharon Fanning arrived. As a matter of fact, as pathetic as most of State's athletic programs are.....women's baskeball was probably the most. We had numerous years where we won 0-1 SEC games all season. Then along comes Fanning. In a few short years, we have our first winning SEC season in the programs history and first NCAA appearance. Not to mention the number of outstanding players she has recruited. She deserves the raise because she has done a good job. Plus, she is still one of the lowest paid women's baskeball coaches in the conference and country.

Fanning really turned up the heat in recruiting and like someone else said, we very nearly made it further than any team in school history. She did a good job and should be rewarded for that. If a sport does not start attracting fans and generating revenue then I don't think more and more money should be pumped into it like a sports bailout. I have heard all of the reason's why we can't afford men's soccer, but then we are giving raises to coaches not generating any revenue. Croom: multi-million dollar contract for 21 wins in 5 years, Fanning 167K a year for pulling our women's bball program out of the dumpster and making it at least respectable. I'd say his way hasn't been working very well -- I agree that Fanning deserves the raise.

Why did Tennessee fans start caring about women's basketball? Why did MSU fans start caring about baseball? Hell, for that matter why did Ole Miss fans start caring about baseball? Because they were winners. The only way to build a winning program is to show that you are serious about it, and that starts by hiring and retaining good coaches. If our women's basketball program wins a couple of SEC titles or makes a Final Four I guarantee you that attendance will increase a good bit.

Posts: 11598 06/17/09 09:26 AM	South Carolina and Kentucky are the only two schools in the SEC that play men's soccer, and they play in CUSA (the only CUSA schools near here that play men's soccer are Memphis and UAB). Travel and scheduling would be a bitch.
