Thanks Polk and LT for banishing John Grisham from MSU |
Lead | ||
|
He just went to Virginia and sunk MILLIONS of dollars into their athletic department, and is described as "one of its greatest benefactors." The
damage LT and Polk did to this athletic department continues to amaze me. Good article by Veazy on the UVA baseball program.

to take shots at Polk, this one was McMahon's doing. He refused to extended a guaranteed, invited walk-on spot to Grisham's son. He was afraid it
would should favoritism. Lord knows we don't want to show favoritism to one of our richest alums. It still pisses me off thinking about that.

Any chance that Cohen extends an olive branch? | #3
|
I believe Cohen played on one of Grisham's favorite teams at MSU judging by the foreward that Grisham wrote for that book about MSU baseball several years
ago. It would be nice if Cohen touched base with him and got him back on campus now that all the previous dickweeds are gone.

At some point, LT should have gone to Mac and said you're going to give this kid a scholarship. Then again, LT would never have even had the thought to do
such a thing. The president at the time was also a 17up too, if I recall correctly.
In my book, LT shoulders quite a bit of blame for this one. |

The sad thing is he didn't even want a scholarship; just a guarantee that he had a walk-on spot. He didn't want to walk-on in the fall only to get
cut. Think about that for a minute.

It's funny to read this... | #8

after all the ridiculous hubbub on this board over Iupe's kid getting a walk-on spot for basketball. The Iupes, while obviously not as rich as John
Grisham, still have a shit-ton of money to donate.

That's why I was never upset with Stan letting Iupe on the team.
And I'm going to kind of respond to several in this thread- I think there is a very good chance that Byrne and Cohen will extend an olive branch to Grisham. Mainly because it makes sense. Especially with some major stadium renovations that will be forthcoming. And McMahon and Raffo were stupid to not allow Grisham on the team. Heck, he apparently was good enough to play for an ACC school. Let him walk-on and take the field in the 9th when we have a big lead on Valley. Is that so bad? And while that was a McMahon feuax paux, Polk has had his share of similar feux paux's. Mark Gillaspie's son who ended up being a first round pick and then Bryce Brentz who just got invited to Team USA from Middle Tennessee. Legacies have very little to do with talent evaluation as much as they are about goodwill. If they turn out to be great players, that's a huge plus. anybody remember a great player for Ole Miss named... | #11

Bernie Hutchinson? He was in the batting cage and McMahon told him to get out and let someone who was gonna play get in there. Bernie then left MSU, went to
Ole Miss and killed us every chance he got. Bernies dad is a surgeon from Tupelo and he is now in Corinth. How about that cash flow we missed out on?

in Texas. Supposedly, what I heard was that Raffy wanted to wait and see who the new coach was going to be and how all of that was going to shake out. Thus, he
went JUCO.
He struggled a little bit at the plate- hit in the 250's when I last checked a month or so ago. But he showed that he has the potential to hit for power- seven home runs. He was drafted out of HS by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 22nd round, so I suspect that unless he falls off of the map, we're going to have to offer him some scholarship money to get him. I don't know where he is on Cohen's radar, but with Russ Sneed graduating, we're going to need a third baseman, although I would really like to get Jackson Posey from Sumrall HS. I do think Palmeiro could play the corner OF spots and of course DH, so I think there could be a place for him. And I never understood why McMahon ran him off. Wasn't it so that Josh West could play?

The difference is in the size of the roster | #16
|
I had no problem letting Iupe sit on the bench and play meaningless minutes. It would have been really easy for McMahon to let Grisham's son ride the pine
in order to kiss ass to one of the wealthy alumni. Hell it's a common practice to give those spots on the end of the bench to the kids of former players
and such.

Don't misunderstand. I agree with Iupe being allowed to sit, and I think it was ridiculous that McMahon wouldn't let Grisham sit. What does it
hurt? It's just a walkon spot.

Well the bad thing now | #20
|
is that the roster limits are going to keep us from doing that. In baseball we're going to have eight spots for walk-ons, and it would be crazy if there
were eight legacies in any particular year.
But here's the bad thing about the baseball players- most of the guys we have mentioned were/are good productive players. Many of the Mississippians were Dandy Dozen and were very good in high school. It's not like these were guys that no one knew about that just happened to be relatives of former MSU baseball players. That makes it much worse to me. It would be like Notre Dame not recruiting Nick Montana. It's stupid. These players should be fish in the barrell when it comes to recruiting.
