When MSU conducted its so-called "search" for a baseball coach... |

I said they were looking at the wrong guy from Kentucky. I said McDonnell was a much better coach than Cohen. And yet we had the usual cast of idiots who
didn't want anyone with any ties to Ole Miss. McDonnell has been at UofL for three years now. Three NCAA appearances, two Super Regionals, and a CWS.
Meanwhile, Cohen left UK in about the same shape he found it. Thanks Ninja.

I'm not bashing Cohen so save the uproar, but McDonnell is a fantastic coach that has proven his worth. If Bianco ever leaves I hope we are smart enough to
hire him.

Cohen has had one year. Did anyone expect a lot more this year? Let's give him at least a Croomish three years before we deem him an idiot.

if for no other reason than to watch the meltdown on the Lake.
I will say this- whoever their last coach was gave him a nice present in Chris Dominguez. That guy is incredible. "Because just being good kids who make good grades isn't good enough anymore."- John Cohen
"This league doesn't care how hard you try. This league cares about having real players who can perform certain skills. If you try to throw a fastball in and you miss the middle of the plate, the league doesn't care that you're a really good kid. The game says you better execute the pitch." - John Cohen |

I thought Croom was a bad hire at the time, too. Not real high on plan D either.

I don't think that Cohen has been or will be a failure by any means, but I really did want McDonnell. I think both would have been very successful.

because this year means absolutely NOTHING. First of all, Cohen was implementing a system that was totally foreign to the players he was dealing with. However, beyond that, with the talent currently available on the MSU baseball team, it really wouldn't have mattered who was coaching. Cohen didn't win with this team and neither would have McDonnell (nor would have Skip Bertman in his prime). We just don't have enough SEC caliber players at this point. It will have to be about 2 more years before any real assessments can be made on whether Cohen is getting the job done or not. While our W-L record was not good this year I was at least fairly pleased with the improved offensive numbers over last year but it wasn't enough improvement to overcome our HS pitching staff. |

Ol Blue wrote:McDonnell would have been a fantastic hire, but we could not have made a better hire than Cohen. Even if McDonnell turns out to be the better coach, how do you turn down a coach that takes KENTUCKY to an SEC BASEBALL REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP, especially when he is a Mississippi State guy? I mean seriously, Cohen was considered one of the bright young coaches in the country, same as McDonnell is now, not then, and he is a Bulldog. While I would never have questioned a McDonnell hire the way some would have, please shut the <17> up until Cohen at least can implement his system. I'm editing this to say that Cohen is still considered one of the bright young coaches in America. And everyone knows he is now coaching at a sleeping giant. |

Blew does that to everyone. It's his own special, identifiable modus operandi. That's why you have to preemptively call him out about it or publicly
post said nasty PM. And for good measure, don't send me a PM, Blew.

To say that Coach Cohen left the program like he found it is the sign of someone suffering from mad cow disease. His UK teams went 24-30( '04), 29-27 (
'05), 44-17 ( '06), 34-19-1 ( '07), and 44-19( '08): he left the program with what Baseball America called the # 4 recruiting class in the
nation. The team that he handed off won 4 of 10 SEC series and had a winning record after sending about 20 guys into the top 10 rounds of the MLB Draft in the
previous three years. To jog your memory, this years club lost Collin Cowgill ( 18 HR, 55 RBI, and a .378 average) and Sawyer Carroll ( 15 HR, 75 RBI and a
.416 average): by the way, both were finalists for the Dick Howser and Golden Spikes Awards for the best player in the country. Your ramblings are idiotic.

...that said, whoever had this team this year would've had the same players and probably the same record. If we had hired McDonnell and Cohen had another
championship contender at Kentucky, everybody in Bulldog-nation will have had a major meltdown. There were some idiotic things this team did this year, worst
of which was batting out of order in the South Carolina series. They don't get the pass from me these other guys are willing to give them next year...if
they don't make the SEC tournament next year, there's something seriously wrong with the baseball program. However, I still think Cohen was the best
hire for The Mississippi State University. I'm hoping the the best players from our Top Five recruiting class come to school instead of going pro, and
there's a huge resurgence.

If we lose some of those guys, it could put us borderline to making the SEC tourney. We will be drastically better next year. I bet we don't have to use
outfielders to close out any SEC games next year.
How Old Blew was overlooked for the douche tourney is beyond me, I really don't give a shit if he sends me a PM or not. |

Cohen brought more talent to Kentucky in the short time he was there than in the previous 20 before him combined. And he will have us back to the top in within
2 more years. If he had had a closer on this years team, they would have been in a regional. As shitty as the talent was he was left with, he still almost
pulled off a miracle.
And you are a complete 17'ing moron if you dont think Mullen is going to do a great job at State. But I am ecstatic you posted aGAIN that you "arent sold on him"...many of us will make that mental note. Just like when you said- "The best proven coordinator out there from a big school and the best head coach from a non-BCS program would not give MSU the time of day" Sooooo, first of all you say we can't hire one, and when we do, you arent sold on him? Thats great stuff. Oh, and don't send me anymore PM's either
Stansbury is 17-44 against the top 25, and 51-82 overall against the top 50...I rest my case (numbers compliments of ScoobaDawg)

Well that makes you a real soothsayer. | #18 | ||

I hated the Croom hire from day one as well. I had never heard of him before he didn't get the Bama job when they hired Shula, then wham bam, Larry steps
up to the plate and hires him. So factor in I didn't know jack about him, plus his lack of college coaching experience, plus his ties to Bama and to Bear,
plus his decision to not report full time to MSU until the Packers were done in the playoffs....none of that impressed me. My high water mark with Croom was
his opening press conference. It was great. But even a day or two after that, I was already developing a dislike for him. I still wish he would have won and
won big, but he obviously is not cut from a winner's cloth as a head coach.
To be fair, I was skeptical about Mullen staying at UF through the championship game, but he handled it much better than Sly did.
