And right off the bat, he's wrong... | #1
Ole Miss is a welcoming place these days. In February, the Rebels agreed to take on at least a dozen recruits with no chance of qualifying to play this fall, then distribute them among Mississippi's many junior colleges. Among that number is Jamar Hornsby, the former Florida Gator booted by Urban Meyer last May after being arrested for using the credit card of another UF student to buy $3,000 worth of gas -- less than a week after the student and her boyfriend, a teammate of Hornsby's, were both killed in a motorcycle accident. He was eventually convicted of four counts of misdemeanor credit card fraud, put on probation and matriculated to East Mississippi Community College. First off, we're only looking at 8 or 9 non-qualifiers at most, possibly as few as 6 or 7, most of which were obviously known on signing day. The rest of the signees over the 25 limit are going to be grayshirted. Saying it's "at least a dozen" is not even close to correct. And yes Hornsby's situation is up in the air, but his grades are in order. He wasn't signed with a plan of placing him anywhere, which is what he's suggesting. I'll admit it's a shady situation with Hornsby to say the least, but at least get it right if you're going to write about it. |

weren't we getting daily | #2

lectures about how unclassy we were b/c of all of the thugs that we had playing football at State? And weren't the lectures coming from olemiss people
most of the time? If fulmer could have lasted just a little longer at tenn., he could have lived to see nutt replace his name on that infamous trophy that is
named after him.

Nice spin. | #6 | ||

Way to gloss over the point of the article by focusing on the number of non-qualifiers instead of the fact that Ole Miss signed a guy that stole a credit card from a dead team-mate's dead girlfriend. |

And the thug stuff doesn't really get to anyone | #7

when it's coming from a team you stomped a mudhole in and walked dry.
If we keep winning 8+ games, kicking top 10 teams in the ass in bowls, and starting (hopefully finish) the season in the top 10, they can change the name of the Fulmer Cup to the Nutt Cup. |

I support the two most frustrating teams in America: The New Orleans Saints and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

As long as we're only taking one guy like that a year, and he's a stud, it's fine by me. You can't litter your team with guys like that, but
you can take a chance on one or two every so often without it hurting the team.
All I'm saying is that he should get his facts straight. Hornsby's grades are in order, and we're not expecting "at least a dozen" non-qualifiers. |

Yep, this off-season has been nothing but negative for us. | #10

I really don't know if I can take it anymore. All this negative publicity we've seen is killing me.

We will have to remember that next time we sign a guy that steal credit cards from dead people. I am sure all the Ole Miss fans would understand since it is
fine to sign one or two every now and then.

They don't give out a character trophy at the end of the year, and I am of the belief that one or two knuckleheads won't hurt your team chemistry, and if you're lucky enough to turn one around and get good production out of him, it's an added bonus. You just better not make it a habit, or else you can end up with the inmates running the asylum. Obviously this Hornsby guy must be a stud. Otherwise, I don't see why we'd put up with it for this long. If he's really that good, I'll be more than happy to see us give him a third or fourth chance. If he starts to cause a problem within the team, you can always cut bait. |

for God's sake, MSU is the school that once sent a basketball team to Australia as good will ambassadors and one of the team robbed a damn bank while
there.

RebelBruiser wrote: ...you are normally a rational poster, as is OP4, but Hornsby would be in the Final Four of Ole Miss douchebaggery. The guy is a thug, plain and simple. As for HDN signing 38 with him even joking about the high number of non-qualifiers populating Mississippi Juco's, well that also puts him in the highest order of douchebaggery. You say 8-9 non-qualifiers, and the rest on greyshirt? That adds up to 4-5 greyshirts. So were all these kids told beforehand that they would be offered a greyshirt when they signed? I doubt that very much. |

The answer to your grayshirt question is yes. | #16

They were cleared with the players on the front end. It was widely reported on the recruiting sites.

You doubt, but you are wrong. Gabriel Hunter was told well in advance, before he officially committed, that he would be a grayshirt candidate. Because of that,
he even looked at Oklahoma State, since he had a full offer there, and he decided to choose the grayshirt at Ole Miss. He even discussed it in his recruiting
articles.
Same thing happened with Andrew Ritter, the kicker. We never made a full offer. He wanted to go to Ole Miss. He took a look at Arkansas since they gave him an immediate offer, but he chose to take the grayshirt at Ole Miss instead. Same story with Mike Thomas and Evan Swindall. You can go back in their recruiting interviews before signing day and see each of them discussing the fact that they were being signed likely as grayshirts. If everyone qualifies that has a chance, there is a possibility that one or two more guys may have to be asked to take a grayshirt. If that's the case, those 1 or 2 will be put in a tough spot. However, knowing how the odds usually work on these things, we'll probably go about 50/50 on the borderline guys, and we'll end up with 3 or 4 grayshirts, as was originally planned. In fact, it's possible that one or two of the guys that signed as grayshirts may end up getting immediate scholarships if things go poorly enough with a few of the borderline guys. So, unless we're really lucky with guys qualifying, no one will be getting their feelings hurt. Those 4 mentioned all knew in advance that they were signing an offer that wasn't going to lead to an immediate scholarship. They had other options and chose to sit out a semester at Ole Miss instead. |

RebelBruiser wrote:...already obligated for your 2010 recruiting class, subtract those plus the 3 lost scholarships for the failure to make APR, that gives you 18 scholarships you can offer in 2010, right? So, how many do you sign in 2010? Just 31? |
