Not good for Sunday Sales, but not dead yet... | #1
|
With the winner of the ward 5 and 3 race, plus Richard Corey, that gives you three votes for Sunday Sales, and you need 4. Ben Carver, GOP candidate in Ward 1,
can be flipped, but he has to beat Bagwell. Bagwell needs to be beat for other reasons too, he wants Starkville to embrace the 1950s mode of thinking.

Don't forget Sandra Sistrunk running in Ward 2. We need her beat Rodney Lincoln. She could be just as pivotal as Mark Duncan not only on issues like
Sunday Sales but also infrastructure improvement and economic development. Ward 2 is now the swing vote in this race.
If you live in Ward 1 and didn't vote for Duncan I'd like to say 17 you. Quite possibly the smartest most level headed guy in any race in the city. How, the 17 can any body not related to Corey Bagwell vote for this guy, he has no platform what so ever other than he is against Sunday Sales. |

Forgot about Ward 2, but yes, Sistrunk needs to win.... | #3
|
Sistrunk and Carver really need to win their respective races, otherwise, not much will happen to help Starkville move forward, because their opponents want to
hold the city back, and will have Roy Perkins and Henry Vaughn helping them do so.

It's not a sealed deal for Dumas in ward 5 either. As much as I'd like to think it is. Signs don't vote but a lot more Mike Allen signs have
sprung up since Maynard lost. You want to talk about a nightmare scenario imagine this:
Ward 1 - Corey Bagwell Ward 2 - Rodney Lincoln Ward 5 - Mike Allen Ward 6 - Roy Perkins Ward 7 - Henry Vaughan (i.e. Roy Perkins rubber stamp) Not only would we not have Sunday sales we might not have alcohol any day of the week. These guys would probably try to re-segregate the schools. But: Ward 1 - Carver (lesser of two evils) Ward 2 - Sistrunk Ward 3 - Gaskins/Parker Ward 4 - Corey Ward 5 - Dumas This board albeit not ideal could get some positive things done, particularly with Wiseman in. If you live in Starkville please go vote on June 2 it is important and your vote counts (Duncan lost by 16 votes) |

ElectroSpanish, you clearly have not done your homework on me. When did I say I was against Sunday alcohol sales? I didn't! (Check out my StarkvilleNow
podcast and my answers on the Starkville Young Professionals website for confirmation.)
I simply said we needed to address our high DUI rate and underage drinking problems before expanding our policy. Then we will be in a safer position to standardize our alcohol policy to include Sunday sales in restaurants. Mike Allen http://www.mikeallen.com |

Is Sunday alcohol sales the only issue that matters to you in Starkville? I think everyone needs to be realistic and realize that getting Sunday sales will
take a compromise or it won't happen at all. Surely smart people like those on this board can think of a compromise that would allow a few drinks at a
restaurant any day of the week without increasing alcohol-related problems (we all know you'd be lying if you said there were no negatives). Offer a
realistic solution that prevents DUIs and reduces underage drinking and you'll have lots of fans.
Remember, Starkville banned smoking outright in restaurants, bars and businesses. Why was that alright but we are told we must expand alcohol sales even though alcohol is much more dangerous than tobacco in the hands of minors and abusers? We're talking about lives here so let's take this seriously and find a good solution. Really. KurtRambis4 -- regrettably, it's inevitable that society will pay for the mistakes of the few who don't follow the rules. Most people don't steal but for the few that do we need to lock our doors. That's inconvenient and restrictive. Likewise, if everyone drove intelligently we would not need speed limits. If everyone paid all their taxes we would not need the IRS. Sadly, those who cause no trouble end up paying for the misdeeds of others. |

No actually its not the only issue I care about, I have met you many times and I can happily say I like your opponent better. As for you, you want to encourage
entrepreneurship and small business development, correct? Well how are you going to do this for restaurants and bars when you want to keep the current bars and
restaurants from serving alcohol on Sunday? To me this will enhance the small business atmosphere and also help recruit new businesses to Starkville. (I.E.
Buffalo Wildwings and Outback Steak house. Both of which I have personally spoken to about coming to Starkville)
As for the rest of your platform, you have a good point about planning and not having to borrow down the road. This TEAM sh*t that you are talking about has already been fixed too. Dan Camp is gone. Problem solved there. Its never good when a mayor gives ultimatums to his board and naturally this is going to cause butting heads. Or did you even know this and I am informing you of "new" news, cause as long as I have been going to BOA meetings, I can say that I have maybe seen you at one or was this person someone else? are you saying that you want to reinstate smoking in bars and restaurants and then let minors smoke the tobacco? |

Full of shit! You're living in a fantasy world. Sunday sales doesn't change a damn thing. If you think that driving an extra ten minutes persuades
anyone from not drinking (on any day of the week), you are a fool. Access to alcohol doesn't equal an increase in traffic accidents or deaths. I know,
because the great state of mississippi pays me to report these statistics to them each and every month of the year.
You really need to pick another job market, because your face isn't made for politics... Edit: I'm not kidding...

Typical politician response- use the perfect to destroy the good | #12
In other words, you want to destroy Sunday Sales, but the Sixpack is so influential that you can't come out and say, "Ahhh's down't wawnt no Suuundaaay saaales" like you really want to. For the record, college towns are going to have high amounts of alcohol consumed, even if you had prohibition. Not to mention, there's a bunch of national chain restaurants staying away from Starkville because you don't want Sunday sales. How about us old, fat alumni who want a nice place to eat and maybe watch some NFL football after church (for the record, not all Christians are Baptists), before going home to Jackson (we may not drink alcohol, but we're not a bunch of uptight assholes towards those who do)? Right now, all we have is Cowbells. So you really want a bunch of college boys and girls going to Columbus on Sunday afternoons and getting liquored up and driving home, endangering MY family with their drunk driving?

Way to get on the most pro-Sunday Sales sites, and be a bitch. You sound just like the people who have been holding Starkville back for many many years. Since
you came on this board, you lost tons of votes.

Mike I appreciate you coming on this board and taking what you had to know was coming but...I know your position on Sunday Sales and other issues. I've
listened to both the SN podcast and the SYP forum. Bottom line on Sunday Sales is that restriction continues to send an negative message to people and
businesses wanting to invest in Starkville as well as alienates the young entrepreneurial community you claim to want to foster. People can hide behind
statistics skewed to fit their argument (i.e. Mike Allen and Marnita Henderon) but it is rediculous that we have laws restricting behavior which is perfectly
legal six other days out of the week. Your arugment about minors and DUI doesn't hold water either because those things are already illegal, that is
simply and issue of enforcement and education. As to enforcement and statistics, perhaps we have such a high DUI rate because our police department has made
DUI enforcement a priority (which is not a bad thing) and other communities such as Columbus have not.
Sunday Sales is a bellwether issue it tells all of us whether or not you are progressive towards business and social issues. Prohibiting Sunday sales is an issue of religion plain an simple all other arguments are just red herring. If your beliefs tell you not to drink on Sunday or any other day don't that doesn't mean I have to feel the same way. The people in Ward 5 who are voting right now feel very strong about this issue. If you want to help Starkville drop out of the race and please tell Marnita to do the same. I'm sure you'll find this offensive but I have trouble seeing much difference between the two of you (and please don't tell me how you are different from Marnita without changing your platform, approach, and appearance). |

I think calling | #18 | ||
|
him a dubmass may be a little out of line. However, if you (mike) think no Sunday sales will drastically alter DUIs then you're just wrong. As another
poster stated, the people that get DUIs are still going to get beer (no matter when it's sold). Likewise, the people that speed will do so whatever the
speed limit is. Furthermore, you're only hurting our cityby disallowing this to happen. I must say, anyone hurting Starkville doesn't deserve our vote.

High DUI rate does not show a problem, just better enforcement | #20
|
DUI rates are going through the roof in all areas of Mississippi, and the country, and it is not because more people are drinking, its because more law
enforcement agencies are beefing up patrol and cracking down on DUIs. This isnt a trend common in Starkville, its everywhere, and it should be a good sign that
we are getting more drunk drivers off the street. Sunday Sales is not about letting the students "get drunk and run wild" on Sundays, it is about
maximizing business and economic opportunities for the city. I believe that you (mike) have been campaigning on doing just that. What other policy can you on
the BoA do that increases the businesses in Starkville as fast as Sunday Sales would. I agree, I am going to work to make sure Jeremiah Dumas is elected in
Ward 5, Sandra Sistrunk in Ward 2, and Ben Carver in Ward 1.
