Is football season going to be a repeat of baseball season - new coach taking over a program without a lot of talent; offense will be better, but overall
results about the same as the year before ?

Football situation is better out of the gate... | #21

...I'm not saying Croom left us the next Florida, but there is no way in hell Croom left the football program in the shambles Polk left the baseball
program.
QB situation notwithstanding, Croom did leave Mullen a little something to work with. On the other hand, Polk didn't leave Cohen jack shit to work with. So regardless of the football team's record this fall, I think you'll see a program that was not completely wrecked by negligence as we currently see with the baseball program. |

The six wins I see | #22 | ||
|
are Jackson State, Middle Tennessee State and then four games that I feel like we should win, but with this being MSU, we certainly could screw some of these
up- Houston at home, Vandy- we match up well with them, and we beat them worse than the 17-14 score would indicate, Auburn on the road- I think that's just
a big mess, and UK on the road. I think Georgia Tech will be a good game. Certainly not pegging that as a win, but it could go either way. If I was betting, I
would go with GT.
I don't see us beating Arkansas at Little Rock. They are invincible there. Especially against MSU. Any other wins would be upsets in my book- Florida, Ole Miss, Bama, and LSU. Good news for us is that all of those are in Starkville. Maybe I'm naive, but I'm not all that worried about playing Fr. as long as they are the best we've got. We will find ways for guys like Bumphis to make plays. "Because just being good kids who make good grades isn't good enough anymore."- John Cohen

My concern would be the fact that teams like UK, Vandy, and Auburn won't be relying on mostly newcomers, unlike MSU. And in Vandy and UK's case, their vets aren't learning totally new systems and they are coming off bowl seasons, unlike MSU. Then couple that with the fact that all 3 of those are on the road. Vandy and AU will be the 2nd & 3rd games of the season, which means your newcomers will have to adjust quickly.

That's your biggest challenge in my opinion. I don't see you winning any of your SEC home games, and with Georgia Tech as a home game, I think that on
paper, you should lose 5 home games at least. To get to 6 wins, you're going to have to win a lot on the road.
According to this compilation of pre-season polls, you have 5 of the Top 11 in the country coming to Starkville this year: Preseason Top 25 I'll be surprised if you win any of those 5. Plus, you get Houston, who went 8-5 last year (6-2 in CUSA), who won't be a pushover in Starkville. There is a decent chance that after you beat Jackson State to open the season, it could be your last win in Starkville for the season just because of who you have to play. Of course, the flip of that is that all of your road games should be winnable. Arkansas, Auburn, Vandy, Kentucky, and MTSU are all beatable, and there is a good chance you'll need to win 4 of those 5 to even have a chance at 6 wins in 2009. It's just not a favorable draw for a team that's going to be somewhat young and trying to learn on the fly. |

That is true | #25 | ||

Our first three games could make or break us.
What I hope happens is that we beat JSU really badly, get some confidence go into the Plains to face an Auburn team that has a pissed off fanbase and hopefully coming off of a loss to West Virginia (I think they play them first, may be wrong about that), and then go into Vandy and play a team that we usually play well against any way. If State started off 3-0, that would be huge for our team- especially the guys that are inexperienced. I think part of the reason for my personal lack of fear about the newcomers and the new system is because when I went to the spring football game, the one thing I was most impressed about than anything was the organization and how well we ran the plays that we put in. But I will agree that it could very well be an issue. "Because just being good kids who make good grades isn't good enough anymore."- John Cohen

As Todd said, QB is the biggest difference. But Mike Wallace, Shay Hodge, and Dexter Mcluster are far better than any WR/ATH we had last year or this year.
Oher, Miller and Jerry are all better than any o-lineman we had.
Defensively, Jerry and Hardy are all that really need to be discussed but the d-line was so superior in talent it was ridiculous. Now maybe the back 7 wasn't as talented,but yes, O significantly outrecruited Croom. Oh yeah, and just for shits and giggles, O signed Shene out of nowhere on signing day. We could have used that guy. |

and we're receiving a lot of hype, what other parallels lead you to that conclusion?
Also, I'll add that the hype you received in 2001 was nowhere near the hype we're getting. Your average preseason poll ranking that year was around 20 or 21. Ours is around 10. I'll also add that I think the main reason your 2001 team choked so bad was lack of leadership and an implosion in the locker room, not lack of talent. That team did have Top 20 level talent. They just imploded on each other after the first close loss of the year. The personalities and leadership on our current team aren't really comparable to the personalities of that 2001 MSU team. |

I said a few weeks ago that I saw a 7-5 finish for MSU. Several here said 6-6 was the best they could see. Today most are saying 4-8, but I think that's
poor mouthing.

If Mullen can win 6 games this fall, he'll get coach of the year. | #38
|
Seriously, it would take a near miracle. Barring a huge upset, we will go 0-4 in our SEC home games. Our road games are all winnable, but they're all on
the road. I doubt we win more than 2 of the 4 at Arkansas, Kentucky, Vandy, & Auburn. So that puts us at 2-6 in the SEC. We'll beat Jackson St.
easily and should beat MTSU on the road (even though Maryland took a loss there last year). The Houston and GA Tech games are going to be tough, especially
the GA Tech one. I doubt we win either, though I do give us a decent shot at beating Houston. So that's 4-8 most likely with a chance to maybe go 5-7 at
best.

With the change in schemes on both sides of the ball, I see some serious ass whippings early in the year for y'all. Think: Arkansas last year -- poor
start, good finish. I really think you get 6 and a bowl. Don't ask me what those 6 are though.
