has the potential to be a bigger waste of time than anything else on the internet.
Destroying more work productivity than Six-Pack, in recognition of its recent anniversary. I signed onto Facebook a month ago, I was curious -- and now have dozens of "friends," many of whom are mere acquaintances. It does have some utility, allowing contact with geographically distant cousins I rarely hear from . But I don't care what somebody just had for lunch, is feeling tired, or just took some kind of online survey. There also seems to be a preponderance of overweight females over 40. Like GenesPage, not some place I'd seek a date. Since some people [yep, on this board too] consider me a twit, I'm not going to twitter and make it official. Whatever Dan da man has to say will show up on the playing field, or not. What transpires before then is mere prologue. |

The day Foglesong resigned I had mentioned to one of the higher administration folks at lunch that there were reports that Doc was going to leave MSU. The
resignation actually happening convinced me of the utility of Sixpack. You never know when something will happen, and somehow it's going to be brought up
here.
As far as Facebook is concerned, people in my profession have long been interested in using technology used by our clientele to better serve them-- and Facebook is such a product. (So are blogs for that matter.) I've had a Facebook page for a little over two years. Honestly, it's used mostly for connecting with family & friends-- old and new. I'm also friends with people in my profession mostly in the state, but also in different parts of the nation-- people who I've met at conferences and such. Sometimes I'll see a post about something that'll be of interest. And sometimes I'll send messages out to people-- whether they're in my profession or are colleagues, and so Facebook is useful in that manner. I try to limit my Facebook time. It helps that I've got notifications set to be sent to my email account. No notifications mean less wasted time on Facebook at work. Like you, I'm not going to tweet, and the only time I've paid a lot of attention to Twitter was the Jackson Free Press twitter feed at the time of the recent Melton-Recio mistrial. |
