Cotton?
Change my answer to an MSU head coaching change the next season. But does Shira count since he died? "Because just being good kids who make good grades isn't good enough anymore."- John Cohen
"This league doesn't care how hard you try. This league cares about having real players who can perform certain skills. If you try to throw a fastball in and you miss the middle of the plate, the league doesn't care that you're a really good kid. The game says you better execute the pitch." - John Cohen |

...not as hard as I thought I guess. Last three NYD bowls for UM:
2008 Cotton - Hired Mullen 2003 Cotton - Hired Croomz 1990 Gator - Hired Sherrill |

I forgot about the Gator Bowl | #3

Hence the Shira comment. I was thinking Ole Miss went to the Sugar Bowl in 1970 or something.

I don't think either of the last two Cotton Bowls were on NYD** | #4

Yes, but the Cotton is a NYD Bowl by definition. | #5

The NYD bowls are moved around sometimes for TV, but they're still the same bowls.
That's an interesting stat though, that our most successful seasons in the last 20 years have coincided with MSU's last 3 coaching changes. |

They did go to the Sugar in '69 or '70... | #6

I have a good friend who was a defensive end on those teams and he tells stories about those seasons all the time. I think maybe they beat Arkansas. Says
Houston was the toughest team he ever played against, it was like boys against men.
You've got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the
chips and dip coming.

it also proves the theory that success by one school forces the other to change | #7

that's why it's better for both of us to be good. When we both suck all that matters is beating the other.

Well, accept that really hasn't been the case with us. | #8

Orgeron was fired after the 2007 season when MSU went 8-5 with a Liberty Bowl win. That's the only recent coaching change we've had that you might
argue was related to MSU success.
Cutcliffe was fired in 2004 following a 4-7 season and an Egg Bowl win over 3-8 MSU. Tuberville left for Auburn on his own after the 1998 season. Brewer was fired after the 1993 season for NCAA violations. Joe Lee Dunn was let go after his one season in 1994 because he was only hired as an interim coach. Before that, Steve Sloan was fired following the 1982 season when MSU went 5-6. MSU was 9-3 and 8-4 in the previous two years, so you might be able to argue that Sloan's firing was related to MSU, but that would be the only one for us in the last 30 years outside of Orgeron. And for the record, I think that the changes at MSU were somewhat coincidence. Croom's firing may have been somewhat related to the performance in the 45-0 Egg Bowl last year. Other than that, I think Jackie was let go simply because it was time, not because of our success. Edited to add: I do think that happens sometimes, and I really think Tuberville's firing in Auburn had as much to do with Bama's 12-0 regular season as it did Auburn's 5-7 season. That, and the general Saban-envy that the Auburn fans have.

Correction. The Cotton Bowl USED to be a "New Year's Day bowl." | #9
|
The Fiesta took its place a long time ago. The Cotton is now a 2nd tier bowl (just below the BCS bowls).
And I really think MSU replacing coaches when UM goes to a big bowl game is more coincidence than anything else. Sherrill was gone before anybody ever knew UM would make the Cotton Bowl in 2003. With a new AD, I really think Crxxm's firing didn't have much, if any, to do with the season UM had. I can maybe see the Felker "resignation" as being partially in reaction to UM's Gator Bowl season, but I think it was more of a long-term decision that that. |

The Cotton Bowl is still above the rest of the non-BCS bowls.
The 4 BCS bowls are a new tier now. Just below them is the Gator, Cotton, Capital One, and Outback Bowls, and you might be able to throw the Holiday Bowl in there since it's the best of the non-NYD bowls. |

I agree that the Cotton is one of the best non-BCS bowls (not the best though). | #11
|
The bowls you mentioned (except maybe the Gator) are all what I'd call Tier 2 bowls, just below the BCS. But the best of that tier is the Capital One. |

patdog wrote: Definitely agree on the Cap One. It's next, and I think the Gator, Cotton, Outback, and maybe the Holiday are all about even. And let me clarify that I was saying that Cotton is in the tier above the rest of the non-BCS bowls, not that it was the best of the non-BCS bowls. I just went back and re-read my other post, and it read like that.

I support the two most frustrating teams in America: The New Orleans Saints and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
