Posts: 1584 03/23/09 12:56 PM	Tags : None This discussion started in another thread, but I figured I'd make a new one just so that old thread didn't get ridiculously long. I went back and looked at our strength of schedule since Stansbury has been here. I looked up overall SOS and non-conference SOS. I offer this one piece of perspective when viewing this though. The mid-majors dominate the top of these rankings almost exclusively and rightfully so because they play in weaker conferences so they have to schedule tougher to boost their tournament resume. Therefore I think a little higher numbers are acceptable as opposed to what you want your overall SOS to be. Premier programs such as North Carolina, UCLA, Louisville, and Michigan State among others were consistently ranked in the 50-100 range. Without further ado, here are the numbers. I'll offer my opinion after, but make of them what you will. To help in reading the rankings, I listed it as such....year is the first number, then overall ranking, then the OOC ranking is in parentheses. The rankings are: '09 - 69 (151), '08 - 60 (120), '07 - 38 (168), '06 - 58 (277), '05 - 51 (86), '04 - 56 (121), '03 - 31 (135), '02 - 28 (103), '01 - 37 (101), '00 - 73 (293), '99 - 126 (313). In light of the mid-major point that I made previously in this post, I think these numbers are respectable, both the overall and OOC rankings. As a whole, I think they are decent with some great numbers in there and some really bad ones also. Like the mid-majors have to schedule up a lot because of their weak conference schedule, I think major conference schools can schedule down some because their conference schedule generally will give them a big boost. Its similar to the argument of SEC schools playing weaker non-conference games in football. Props to DerHntr for the fark.

Perhaps Home and Homes or 2 for 1s are scheduled far out in advance(2-3 years), but thats due the the nature of them being multi year agreements. Since that makes up barely any of our schedule(any of it even?), that really isnt applicable. If you have something that says we set games years out, then by all means toss it up because it would be interesting to read about.

I mean, when Texas signed up to play a team that had just fired it's coach and had a losing season, you think that was because of some of Pearl's winning scheduling method? They sucked, people wanted to play them, Pearl did a good job turning them around. Michigan State and the like aren't coming to Starkville, because we aren't perceived as bad anywhere aside from the hotel room you're currently in. Because it doesn't matter who we play, if we had beaten San Diego and Charlotte and been 21-10 at the end of the year, we probably would have been in regardless of the tourney. I don't think playing and losing at Duke or UCLA will help us come tourney time. He recently said in football you aren't going to see us scheduling non-conference games aGAINST powerful teams. We are looking for the four easiest wins we can get there. I laugh at you for thinking our program could be much more than it is now. We might make an every now and then run deep in the tournament, but we are doing about as well as we can ask for. They basicall played teams ranked in the RPI 100's instead of the 200's. Yes it adds up to a better RPI but they were not going and playing Duke or Michigan State. Ole Miss had no say so in the Louisville game because that was part of the SEC/Big East challenge. If a team won't come to Starkville then piss on them.

Posts: 709 03/24/09 07:37 AM	In the years we've been a bubble team and/or a low seed, haven't OOC losses been the problem? The RPI is low because of the losses, not the SOS. If we were rolling through the OOC schedule every year, then this would be a valid discussion. But especially if we're having trouble beating teams we should beat early in the year, bring on the middle-of-the-pack OOC. Even this year, with an easy OOC schedule and a "down" SEC that gave us fewer chances to improve our RPI, we were a couple of late season wins from an at-large bid (if I recall, the concensus was that 11-5 in the SEC would have gotten us in, and possibly 10-6). So why would we bother adding games we can't win when we're not winning the ones we're supposed to? I don't follow that logic. And methinks it's because it's not very logical.

We might make an every now and then run deep in the tournament, but we are doing about as well as we can ask for. for the violation i profusely and unabashedly apologize...i bet he doesnt disagree in the concept as a whole. there are exceptions to every rule and the SEC in football is one of them. i didnt say schedule stupid but schedule tougher and better and it will make our hoops program better. in football we dont have to schedule OOC with tough teams bc we play the toughest teams in the country every saturday in conference. in basketball we do not play that kind of conference schedule as far as toughness goes. i laugh at you for thinking our program cant be better. with the statement you made it kicks up the argument about our fanbase being complacent, settling for just what we have, blah, blah, blah. im not trying to bring that up because to each his own but i think we can be better in hoops. we arent doing as well as can be asked for. in college hoops the avenue is there for us to be a perennial power.
