my only question is the names....why in the heck would they have Magnolia in the name? The Battle for Magnolia? Only one team is in the magnolia state. Seems kind of dumb. Other than that, who cares?

Just make it the battle for the Mighty Mississippi or something. At least the river divides them......or, every other year, when it is in Baton Rouge at night, it can be called the Jonestown massacre....

Again, how does it show desperation? This idea was initiated at LSU. They're the ones looking to give it an official name. They were the ones to contact us about naming the thing.

I have never noticed that.

The only thing that Ole Miss has going for it is the friggin' square in Oxford, and it's a damn cool place. Having all those bars right there close is sweet. But nothing else up there is better than what State has. And the Main Street deal and Cotton District is giving Starkville a unique feel too. I went to LSU for undergrad and Ole Miss for grad school. I grew up in Oxford with family in Louisiana.

THIS RIVALRY IS NOT SOME RECENTLY CRAFTED INVENTION!

The effort to do this is a joint effort by both student governments. You think if there weren't a shit ton of history here that LSU would choose to do this with a school whose got 15 football wins in the last 4 years?

I'm all about poking the seemingly dead corpse of Ole Miss football with a stick...

There was an article a few weeks ago (this whole thread is seriously Germanic) about the LSU student government contacting the Reb student government about doing it...don't remember where I saw it linked...nafoom, maybe?

Not that UM folks aren't deluded about the whole "rival" thing...but this one isn't on them. LSU in this day and age just doesn't have that "hate" thing going on with anybody...doesn't really work with Arky...Bama sort...

I've never been able to figure this out, but its so true. The only explanation I can come up with is that the older ole miss crowd derives its pride from past football success. The older MSU crowd was lucky if State won 6 games in their 4 years.

Actually, this idea originated I believe with the LSU student newspaper. So it's not coming from our end. LSU doesn't have a true rivalry game, so they have been searching for rivalries. They have a fabricated rivalry with Arkansas, and they hate Alabama and Auburn (much in the same way State and OM hate Bama and Auburn), but none of those games are true rivalry games.

Either way, it's a stupid idea, and the names they have for the rivalry aren't any good.

Ole Miss defines the idea that if you tell yourself a lie long enough it eventually becomes true. They "pretend" to have a sports history, they "pretend" that their athletic facilities are something special, the "pretend" that MSU is inferior, etc...

What bugs me most of all being a yankee transplant is how MSU fans buy into this garbage when the true flagship university is MSU. I moved here not knowing Ole Miss from MSU from Southern. The grades,...

LSU/OM is more more like an abusive relationship than a rivalry. They meet up every now and then, get as <17>-ed up as possible, and before the night is over LSU beats the crap out of OM.

How about the "Thank you sir, may I have another" Bowl. Oh wait, I think we were going to use that for our Arkansas game.
