I was one of those referee's and you are right, this happened all the time (1 out of 4 games). It was almost unbelievable how much it happened.

Yes, I talked to them like they were 5 and made sure they knew what they were doing. Explaning their stupidity after halftime is a much bigger headache.

the coin toss is all about getting the choice. You either make the choice now or make it later. If you say "kick", you have made the choice and given the other team teh choice in teh 2nd half.

that statement couldn't be more wrong. electing to kick never means that you get the ball at any time, unless you're playing playstation, and your only options are kick or receive or choose an end. if you win the opening toss and want the ball to start the second half, you have to say "defer", not "we...

If you win the coin toss and choose to kick to open the game, you automatically receive to start the second half (and vice versa).

Deferring to the second half means you're opting to let the other team make the choice to start the game, even though you won the coin toss. Deferring means that you are "putting off" your choice. Then you'd be stupid to choose to kick to start the second half.

In the 2000 UF game, we won the toss, deferred, and they chose to...

I believe you are correct.

That is the scenario that played out in the Miami v. U Washington game in which the Huskies broke the Canes record home winning streak in the Orange Bowl. Miami won the toss and a player (I think it was Warren Sapp) simply said "We'll kick."

instead of defer. we quickly chose the end zone like you said. so in the second half, we obviously opted to receive. either way - same result.

i always hated in intramural football (i was usually the coin-toss caller) when the other team would win and instantly say "we want to kick", only to have the referee explain to them, like they're 5 years old, that "you have three options: kick, receive, or DEFER TO THE SECOND HALF." if you're stupid enough to...

Spurrier sent Marquand Manuel, and some LB out as team captains.

We won the toss, and deferred. One of them said "We choose to kick". Apparently defensive players don't quite understand why they used to chose to kick when they won the toss, they just knew it always happened.

Before the utter stupidity of what transpired completely hit everyone, one of our captains (apparently fast thinking) called an endzone and walked off.

for the entire game if Im not mistake. He was averaging well over a hundred coming in to that game.

Tubberville made some excuse about it being cold after the game.

and then the team that gets deferred to chooses to kick.

That, leaves the other team the option to take the ball in the 2nd half as well as the 1st. I could be wrong on that.

I believe they won the toss and took the direction. Spurrier was not happy about it after the game.

That and the Auburn game the next week are the most electric for an entire game I have seen Scott Field.

It seems to me as if we received the kickoff in both halves due to a mistake that their captain made during the coin toss. Can anyone else confirm this, or I am remembering this wrong?
