We never try to do anything special scheme wise up front.

i thought that was part of our EJ-Cheese defensive philosophy, which was to play zone and rush only 4 straight up. the next stunt we run will be the first of the last few years. now as far as technique - that should be on turner.

but it seems like it was Pegues that couldn't get off his block all game which meant we never had anyone on the pitch man. Just my vague memory.

It's kind of hard to say the guy sucked when we never ran any option. Maybe the guys stuff was crap, but considering Croom and McCorvey's track records as offensive gurus, I'm going to take the option guys side.

rug - if that's the case then I think he'll be gone next year. I think Torbrush will recognize it since he's been around a while. I'm also a big fan of having position coaches having played that position at a high level - I just think they know all the ins and outs of the position better and relate to the player better. Only so much you can look from coaching clinics and stuff in my opinion.

is with DTs.. We havent had solid DTs since probably Robinson and Johnson. I honestly want Boyd and Cox to redshirt.. I highly doubt both do, I'd say its 50/50 on of them does. Its disappointing for me to see Turner talk about guys not giving great effort all the time. That combined with marginal talentcan make for a really long year..

Jackson I think played in 5 games, and only had 1 tackle and 1 assist.

Im just glad that Coach O wasn't the only coach that did this to an in state school.

Its so freaking stupid, unfortunately too many coaches do it to appease the player.

He played a pretty good bit last year at DT as a Fr. and did OK. I think having a d-line of Cox, Boyd, Jackson, and Stigars could be pretty stout in two-three years.

If we ran a 3-4, we could rotate Boyd and Jackson.

And what about the plethora of DE's Croom recruited? Surely a couple of them could slide over to the OLB positions.

I like Hardy on the o-line myself as well. He could be a decent guard for us. Seems to me like we need tackles more than anything...

Watching him this spring he was unblockable. I know spring hype is typically bull shit but his dominance was the most obvious mismatch on the field. I just hope out interior O'line isn't that bad.

On a side note I look for Trevor Stigers to surprise some people this year.....

He was one of those guys who Gene did a story on at least once a week, just like Chaz Ramsey, until he committed to AU, but I did think he would play much better on the OL than the DL.

I figure with Boyd and Cox, I don't see a reason to keep trying to fit Hardy on the D-line.

He likes hardy's potential on the D-Line.

Regardless of what we think of Croom, this is now 2 staffs in a row that have hardy on the O-line. I think he was just bigger than people in high school and that's why he was so good on the D-Line.

I think the combination of Templeton Hardy and Josh Boyd would be good DT backups to Kyle Love and Pernell McPhee. Inserting Hardy into the DT rotation would free up McPhee and Cox to play outside more and make the whole D-line more effective.

The problem is that we don't have OL depth and one of our better DTs is languishing on the offensive line. Which forces us to put players like McPhee and Cox on the inside.

Lack of depth on the OL has caused players on both...

True DT's are the hardest guys for us to land. I think Cox and McPhee would make fine ends in a 3-4. Shmuley, I know we are going to run a 4-3, this is just wishful thinking. I understand the other guy's point about needing large DE's in a 3-4, but I think we can do that.

As for the OLB's, you have a lot of NFL teams that run pure pass-rushing OLBs and use the zone to make up for any coverage deficiencies. Look at San Diego. Do you think Merriman's forte is...

The main reason we have to slide guys inside is because we only have two or three true DTs on the team, and they aren't even worth a shit with the exception of Love. Croom thought he could bulk every 250lb guy we signed up to 290lbs and it didn't work.

I know we won't, but I would like to see us sign James Carmon and two hs DTs this year. Hopefully Boyd pans out.

in pass coverage. Im sure KJ Wright could cover in space, but as to McCardell and Ferguson, I think matched up against HB or TE's would be a problem.

Also, in a 3-4, you need 6-4, 280 type DE types like Tyson Jackson. Also you need two solid Nose guards that can truly eat up space and keep the lineman off your ILB. If I remember correctly also, you need one of your ILB to be basically in the 245-255 range, with his job to take on the OL, while your other ILB can be freed up...

on dawgsbite doesn't sound very good.

I was pretty excited about Turner after the first year, but now the jury is out IMO. Our DL play last year was pretty bad, especially rushing the passer.

We'll see if the group can make some improvements. I'm sure having McPhee is gonna help.
